Siegfried Schulz (born December 29, 1870 in Schwedt / Oder ; † December 1942 in Berlin -Lankwitz) was a Prussian officer , most recently a major , and military leader of the Schulz Freikorps named after him .

Life

The son of a merchant Siegfried Schulz began his military career in 1890 as a flag junior with the infantry regiment "Duke of Holstein" (Holsteinisches) No. 85 in Rendsburg . As a captain , he was initially an adjutant in the 33rd Infantry Brigade in Altona , before he was used as a company commander in the 7th Thuringian Infantry Regiment No. 96 in Gera in 1910 . In 1913 he was appointed major and, associated with it, was transferred to the 5th Lorraine Infantry Regiment No. 144 in Metz .

With the outbreak of World War I , he took over the Metz Infantry Regiment No. 98 in 1914 . In January 1918 Schulz was appointed commander of the Reserve Infantry Regiment No. 219 and, after merging with the 8th Lorraine Infantry Regiment No. 159 based in Mülheim an der Ruhr, also took over its leadership.

With the surrender of Germany in November 1918 and the establishment of the Versailles Treaty (1919), which provided for a drastic reduction in the Reichswehr, Siegfried Schulz and his released soldiers founded the approximately 1000-strong Freikorps Schulz . This paramilitary unit, which also operated under the name “Treubund”, was involved in suppressing mass strikes on the Rhine and Ruhr, supporting the Kapp Putsch (1920) and resisting the Franco-Belgian occupation of the Ruhr area ( Ruhrkampf ).

On August 27, 1939, the so-called Tannenberg Day , Siegfried Schulz was given the character of a colonel.
