Siegfried Weichlein

Siegfried Weichlein (born December 4, 1960 in Thalau ) is a German historian and university professor at the University of Freiburg (Switzerland) .

Life

Siegfried Weichlein graduated from high school in Fulda in 1979 . He then studied history, philosophy and Catholic theology in Freiburg im Breisgau, Jerusalem and Tübingen . From 1983 to 1984 he studied abroad at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem . From 1984 to 1992 he was a scholarship holder of the Cusanuswerk (basic funding and doctoral funding). He was at the University of Freiburg to the Dr. phil is doing his doctorate.

In 1992, Weichlein became a research assistant at the Institute for History at the Humboldt University in Berlin (until 1999). Also from 1992 to 1995, Weichlein was Deputy Chairman of the Staff Council of Humboldt University. In 1995/1996 he was a visiting scholar at the Center for European Studies at Harvard University . In 1998 and 2001 he was Robert Bosch Visiting Professor at the University of Chicago .

In 2002 he completed his habilitation - supervised by Heinrich A. Winkler - in the subject of Modern and Contemporary History at the Humboldt University in Berlin. During the 2003 summer semester he was in the chair for the history of the 19th century at the Ruhr University in Bochum . He then was Visiting Assistant Professor at the History Department of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, for the "Duke-in-Berlin Program". In the winter semester 2003/2004 and in the summer semester 2004 he represented the chair for modern history at the University of Cologne . In the summer semester of 2014 he was also visiting professor at the Nikolaus-Kopernikus University in Thorn . In the summer semester 2005 and in the winter semester 2005/2006 he represented the chair of contemporary history at the Friedrich Meinecke Institute of the Free University of Berlin . In February and March 2006 he was visiting professor at the University of Santiago de Compostela , Spain. Since March 1, 2006, he has been Professor of European and Swiss Contemporary History at the University of Friborg (Switzerland) . There he was Chairman of the Institute Council of the Center for European Studies (March 2018 - March 2015) and other university bodies.

Since 2009 he has been a member of the historical commission of the SPD , since March 2011 a member of the Philosophical Class of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts in Salzburg.

He is a member of the editorial committee of the “Swiss Journal for Religious and Cultural History” and co-editor of the series “Schöningh Collection on Past and Present” (Verlag Ferdinand Schöningh).

Siegfried Weichlein is married and has two children.
