Siegmund Brandt (born July 17, 1936 in Berlin ; † August 28, 2016 in Munich ) was a German physicist and university professor .

Life

Brandt, son of Leo Brandt , studied physics at the University of Bonn with a degree in 1959. The subject of his diploma thesis, supervised by Wolfgang Paul , was the construction of a small bubble chamber for experiments on the 500 MeV electron synchrotron in Bonn . In 1961 Brandt moved to CERN , where he worked on the analysis of the pion - proton interactions, which were measured in the local hydrogen bubble chamber at energies of 10 GeV . 1962–1965 he worked there with a permanent position. In 1963 he was treated with his dissertation interaction of negative π meson a pulse of 10 GeV / c with protons, with particular consideration of the generation of pairs of strange particles and the methods for evaluating the bubble chamber images of the University of Bonn PhD . In 1966 he completed his habilitation with the habilitation thesis Newer Results on Pion Proton Scattering at High Energies at the University of Heidelberg . He then became a Scientific Councilor at the Institute for High Energy Physics at Heidelberg University. In 1971 the financial affair of the institute's director Heinz August Filthuth became public, who was finally convicted in 1973 by the Heidelberg regional court for fraud and breach of trust .

In 1972 Brandt was appointed professor of physics at the new University of Siegen . At the same time he became the founding senator and member of the founding rectorate of the university. He and his group took part in the PLUTO experiment at DESY . With the analysis of three-jet events of gluon braking radiation , he contributed to the discovery of gluon in 1979, for which the scientists involved received the Special High Energy and Particle Physics Prize in 1995 . After working at DESY, he took part in the ALEPH experiment at CERN led by Jack Steinberger . In 2001 he retired .

From 1982 to 2002 Brandt was a member of the scientific and technical council of the Jülich Research Center . At DESY he was a member of the Scientific Council and its chairman from 1990–1993. In 2011 he became a foreign member of the Polska Akademia Umiejętności .
