The Siggern ( [ˈzɪkərn] ) is a 9 km long stream that flows into the Aare near Flumenthal in the canton of Solothurn .

geography

course

The Siggern rises below the Röti near the Balmberg in the Solothurn Jura at about 1185  m above sea level. M. It has three main source brooks, which pour north of the Balm ruins into the Siggern. It is fed by a few other streams, the largest of which is the Gummenbach . The Siggern lies on the soil of the communities Balm bei Günsberg , Günsberg , Hubersdorf , Attiswil and Flumenthal . Near Attiswil it leaves the canton of Solothurn for almost 1 km and is now in the canton of Bern . At Flumenthal it flows at 418  m above sea level. M. in the Aare.

Catchment area

The 22.84 km large catchment area of the Siggern is drained via the Aare and the Rhine to the North Sea.

It consists of 42.9% forested area , 47.8% agricultural area , 8.5% settlement area , 0.2% water area and 0.6% unproductive areas.

The mean height of the catchment area is 705  m above sea level. M. , the minimum height is 417  m above sea level. M. and the maximum height at 1395  m above sea level. M.

Hydrology

The Siggern has a relatively large gradient averaging 0.87%. As a result, it carries a lot of debris, especially in the upper reaches . The lower reaches are shallower, but here, too, the still high flow velocity prevents aquatic plants from settling. As with many bodies of water in the Jura, the water level in the Siggern also varies considerably. The karst subsoil in the Jura allows a lot of water to seep away.

Ecomorphology

The Siggern is relatively little built and on many routes little or natural impairment.

geology

According to more recent geological findings, the Siggern in the lower reaches apparently flows in the so-called Hubersdorf channel. This was not only created by warm-time erosion , but also by Quaternary glacier advances and their meltwater.
