The 5.3 km² municipal area includes a section of the Solothurn Jura and has relatively large differences in relief. It stretches from the valley below the village northwards over the fields around the clustered village and the predominantly wooded, partly rocky steep slope up to the ridge of the Weissenstein range. The mountain slope is subdivided by several valleys that lie in the catchment area of the Siggern , a left tributary of the Aare . economy

Günsberg was a predominantly agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . From the 16th to the 19th century gypsum was mined above the village and processed in gypsum mills. Even today, arable farming and fruit growing in the lower elevations as well as cattle and dairy farming in the upper part of the municipality and alpine farming on the mountain pastures have a certain significance in the income structure of the population. Numerous other jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. In Günsberg today there are companies in the building trade, the electrical industry, IT and timber construction. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. Many employed people are therefore commuters who mainly work in the Solothurn region. On the Balmberg there is a spa house, snow sports facilities and a forest rope park.

traffic

The community is located away from the larger through routes on a connecting road from Attiswil and Riedholz over the Balmberg pass trail to Welschenrohr in the Thal district, first mentioned in 1574 . The closest connection to the A1 motorway (Bern – Zurich) is around 7 km from the village at Wangen an der Aare . Günsberg is connected to the public transport network through postbus courses from Solothurn to Balm bei Günsberg and on the Balmberg.

The Jurahöhenweg runs along the main ridge of the Jura chain .

history

The first written mention of the place comes from 1307 with the name Gunsperch . Later the names Gunsperg (1336), Guinsberg (1374) and Günsberg (1424) appeared. The place name goes back to the Old High German personal name Gundo and thus means mountain / mountain pasture of the Gundo .

Günsberg has been under the rule of Balm since the Middle Ages . Together with this rule, the village came to the Counts of Strassberg as an imperial fief in 1312 and, after various changes of ownership, to the city of Solothurn in 1411. The city had already had high jurisdiction over Günsberg since 1344. In the 15th century, the village was under the Bailiwick of Balm, from 1487 it was part of the Bailiwick of Flumenthal . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Günsberg belonged to the Solothurn administrative district during the Helvetic and from 1803 to the Lebern district.

Attractions

Today's late baroque church of Saint Pantaleon was enlarged in 1960; it has an altarpiece from around 1700. It originally goes back to the St. Pantaleon chapel, which has been mentioned since 1336, but was destroyed during the turmoil of the Reformation in 1529 and rebuilt in 1537. Günsberg initially belonged to the Flumenthal parish, but was raised to an independent parish in 1695.
