Sigmund Eggert
Sigmund Eggert (born February 13, 1839 in Munich , † August 25, 1896 in Walchstadt ) was a German genre painter.
Life
Sigmund Eggert was a son of the Munich glass painter Franz Xaver Eggert (1802–1876) from Höchstädt an der Donau and his first wife Barbara, née Gsell.
First he attended the drawing school of the Bavarian Arts and Crafts Association in Munich. On November 22, 1855 he began studying painting at the Munich Art Academy with Hermann Anschütz and Joseph Schlotthauer . From the end of the 1850s he was an assistant in his father's glass painting workshop, but later continued his studies in genre painting with Arthur von Ramberg .
In 1875 he married Therese Riederer, a master tailor's daughter from Munich, with whom he had two daughters. Having settled in Munich, he was involved as an honorary district head (District 13 of the VI. District of Munich) and as a poor welfare councilor. Around 1890 he separated from his wife and moved to Walchstadt am Wörthsee in Upper Bavaria.
From working as a glass painter he switched to oil painting around 1870 and created figural scenes and portraits. He showed his work in numerous exhibitions, such as “The Favorable Moment”, “The Spiritual Arbitration Court” and the counterparts “Von Ihr” / “Für Ihn” in the Munich local exhibition in 1875, “Visit to the Village Painter” at the World's Fair in Philadelphia, USA , 1876, or "Lenerl, schneid 'mi nit!" On the occasion of the Kunstverein exhibition in Bremen 1878. Through the reproduction of numerous of his pictures as wood engravings in the magazines of the time - Daheim , Deutscher Hausschatz , Die Gartenlaube , Über Land und Meer and others - his pictures and pictorial themes became extremely popular.
