The Sims 3 (spelled The Sims 3 ) is a life simulation from the developer studio The Sims Studio. Publisher of the game on June 4, 2009 (Germany) and June 2, 2009 (USA) released game is Electronic Arts . It is the third part of the computer game series The Sims and the sequel to The Sims 2 .

In autumn 2014, the successor The Sims 4 was finally released (announced by Electronic Arts and Maxis on May 6, 2013).

Gameplay

The games in the Sims series are simulations of everyday life in which humans are referred to as "Sim". The player can create one or more Sims and is mainly concerned with everyday things such as working, making friends, meeting friends, first love, needs (food, fun, hygiene, etc.) or looking after the family. It is also possible to plan, build and furnish houses. There are several different careers the Sim can pursue: science, business, gastronomy, journalism, politics, medicine, law enforcement, military, music, sports, criminals, and more.

Innovations

In The Sims 3 you play in an open neighborhood; there is no loading time when changing properties. This open neighborhood includes community properties such as a fitness center, various shops and restaurants, and a city park. However, many of the community buildings are just finished objects in which the Sims simply disappear and cannot be operated interactively. For the first time, neighbors can now be visited in their homes or met on the way to the city center. Another innovation is that clothing and furniture can be colored and given patterns according to user specifications. The controls have also been changed, the player can now use the W, A, S and D keys to move around the screen.

There are now seven stages of aging instead of six, and young adults have been added.

Adult Sims and Retired Sims can now have five character traits , babies and toddlers can have two, children three, and teenagers four. These traits influence the desire system and the professional goals of the Sims as well as their social life. The mood of the Sims is now displayed by so-called moodlets , although there are still mood bars . In addition, there are now only six needs (hunger, hygiene, urination, social, fun and energy; environment and comfort are omitted, but a high comfort and / or environment value is shown as a positive moodlet).

One of the biggest gameplay changes is opportunities . These are tasks that the Sims can complete to earn rewards. These quest-like tasks occur at random during the course of the game.

The Sims 3 Store

For the second time in Sims history, there is an official online store (it already existed in The Sims 2, but it was closed after The Sims 3 came out). New clothes, hairstyles, objects and furniture sets can be purchased there for so-called SimPoints . These SimPoints are exchanged for real money. Players who register The Sims 3 online will get free access to another neighborhood called Riverview .

Since the 10th anniversary of The Sims , EA has been offering free downloadable game objects in the Sims 3 Store, which are known from the games The Sims and The Sims 2. The Sims 3 store was regularly expanded with new sets. Objects with new gameplay have also been added, such as Madame Gundelinde Horror's Spell Book , which allowed Sims to learn spells such as "Turn your fellow Sims into animals" (as a reference to The Sims 3: Just Be Animal ). In the Sims 3 Store, official EA worlds were also published, which can be purchased for SimPoints. In August 2014, the Sims 3 store was last updated with a new set.

It was criticized that the prices of the Sims 3 stores in Germany are considerably more expensive than in the USA. However, since December 16, 2011 the prices for SimPoints have fallen, so 1,000 SimPoints now only cost seven euros instead of the previous ten euros.

Collector's Edition

The Collector's Edition is a special edition of the game. This includes the standard version of the game The Sims 3 , a 2- gigabyte - USB flash drive in the diamond design called Plumbob , a solution booklet (about eight pages) with tips and tricks and a download code for an exclusive sports car, which will be integrated into the game can.

The fact that the Collector's Edition does not exclusively contain SimPoints worth twelve euros as announced, but that buyers of the standard version can also redeem them online caused displeasure among buyers. The supposedly contained solution book was also criticized, as it is actually only a small booklet with reference to the official solution book from Prima Games . The increased purchase price of the Collector's Edition is therefore not justified. As compensation for disappointed buyers, EA made an additional 500 SimPoints (worth five euros) available to everyone who registered their Collector's Edition.

The release date was February 20, 2009. Electronic Arts postponed the release date to June 2, 2009 in the USA and to June 4, 2009 in Germany. According to EA, over 1.4 million copies of The Sims 3 were sold worldwide within the first week . The Sims 3 was thereby also the most successful PC sales launch in the history of Electronic Arts. Seven million downloads of user content were also recorded in the first week.

Expansion packages

EA released a total of eleven expansion packs that add new content and functions to the game.

Console versions

The Sims 3 is also available for various consoles ( PlayStation 3 , Nintendo DS , Nintendo Wii , Nintendo 3DS and Xbox 360 ). The console versions differ not only from the PC version, but also from console to console.
