Sing Along Songs for the Damned & Delirious -

Sing Along Songs for the Damned & Delirious is the second studio album by the Swedish metal band Diablo Swing Orchestra . It was released on September 21, 2009 on the British label Ascendance Records.

Emergence

After the band initially released their debut album The Butcher's Ballroom themselves (later sold under license in Europe by Candlelight Records ), a worldwide record deal was signed with the Ascendance Records label for the second album .

The recordings for the new album took place from April 6th to May 1st, 2009 at IF Studios in Gothenburg (formerly Studio Fredman ), the band's own studio of the Swedish melodic death metal band In Flames . The producer was Roberto Laghi , who in addition to his work for In Flames has also worked with other Swedish bands such as Sonic Syndicate and Mustasch .

Cover

The band performed at the 2010 Global East Rock Festival; to be seen in the background: A section of the album cover designed by Bergting

The album cover was designed by the Swedish fantasy author and illustrator Peter Bergting , known for the bestseller - graphic novel Gängkrig 145 , and depicts a fairground scene with a children's carousel .

music

As on their debut album, the band combines a multitude of different styles in their music to create a “ crossover of metal , swing , jazz , classical and much more”. The large number of different instruments is also striking, which in addition to the usual instrumentation of a metal band also includes piano , accordion , harmonium , cello , violin , acoustic guitar , percussion instruments such as timpani and marimba as well as various wood and brass instruments .

A combination of hard guitar riffs , cello accompaniment and big band- like swing interludes forms the foundation of the music, including references to classics of the swing era, such as Sing, Sing, Sing (“A Tap Dancer's Dilemma"). Latin American influences can also be heard , such as tango or mariachi interludes (“ A Rancid Romance”) or even salsa influences (“Lucy Fears the Morning Star”). Occasionally come Synthesizer - arpeggios ( "New World Widows") or elements of folk music before ( "Siberian Love Affairs"). The psychedelic-spherical synthesizer sounds of the final track "Stratosphere Serenade" are also inspired by progressive or space rock and generally electronic music .

Another key element of the music is the “ operaticsinging of the classically trained soprano Annlouice Wolgers. She is supported by Daniel Håkansson's bass voice , with whom she often sings together in alternating sequences. The vocal part of Håkansson has increased significantly compared to the previous album. As part of a guest appearance, the baritone voice of the Swedish opera singer Kosma Ranuer can also be heard on two songs on the album .

reception

Because of the many thematic and musical analogies to circuses , popular folklore , operetta-like revues or music theaters , which are also reflected in the motif of the album cover, the music was also referred to as "carnival metal", whereby the band was by no means purely a fun project should be misunderstood, since the mood can sometimes turn gloomy. In doing so, comparisons were often made with bands with similar styles, such as Stolen Babies or Unexpect .

Versions

The album is sold in three different versions. On the one hand, the normal retail version with audio CD in digipak , which is also sold digitally. There is also an edition limited to 2,000 pieces with an elaborately designed digipak and an additional bonus DVD. Most recently, before the album was released, there was the opportunity to pre-order a special edition limited to 300 pieces with additional extras directly from Ascendance Records via mail order.
