Smirnowo ( Kazakh and Russian Смирново ) is a place in Kazakhstan .
geography
Smirnowo is located in northern Kazakhstan in the Northern Kazakhstan region and is the administrative seat of Audany Aqqaiyng . The place is located about 40 kilometers south of Petropawl and about 140 kilometers north of Kökschetau . The flat surrounding area is mainly characterized by numerous small and large lakes.
history
Smirnowo was founded in the 19th century. When the construction of the railway line between Petropavlovsk and Kokshetau began in the early 1920s, a train station was opened here a little later. In 1923 the place was renamed Smirnowo in honor of a Soviet functionary who was involved in the construction of the railway line; previously the place was called Darmin (Дармин). In the years that followed, the village initially consisted of just a few houses along the railway line and a few more houses on three streets.
In 1941 Smirnowo became the administrative center of a Rajon. From the 1950s onwards, the construction of apartments and social facilities began. Among other things, a building for the local party committee, a school and a regional hospital were built. In 1961 the place became an urban-type settlement .
In 2004 Smirnowo was again downgraded to village status.

At the 1999 census, Smirnowo had 7,443 inhabitants. The last census in 2009 showed a population of 5,796 for the place. The extrapolation of the population resulted in a population of 5550 as of January 1, 2020.

Economy and Transport
Smirnowo is connected to the Kazakh railway network; There is a train station in the village on the route from Kokshetau to Petropavl. In Smirnowo there are mainly agricultural processing companies. In the northeast of the local area there are several grain elevators in which several thousand tons of grain can be stored, as well as two grain mills . There are also companies that produce baked goods.
