Soigne ta droite is a jazz album by Ken Vandermark's Entr'acte group . The recordings made at the Artacts Festival for jazz and improvised music in St. Johann in Tirol on March 11, 2018 were released on Audiographic Records in October 2019.

background

Entr'acte is one of a long line of small big bands that Ken Vandermark has led since the 1990s. He often builds these ensembles from a much smaller ensemble, and the core band this time around is Shelter (Vandermark on woodwind , Nate Wooley on trumpet, Steve Heather on drums, and Jasper Stadhouders on bass and guitar). With the addition of some European musicians, the ensemble performed in Austria at the Artacts Festival . To illustrate his compositional mission and the roles of the musicians, Vandermark often divides either the bands or the music into easily manageable sections, noted Bill Meyer. This time it is the former option; There is a trio of wind instruments (Vandermark, Wooley and the saxophonist Mette Rasmussen ), another of string instruments (Jasper Stadhouders, bassist Joe Williamson , guitarist Terrie Ex ) and a group of three percussionists (Steve Heather and Didi Kern on drums, and Elisabeth Harnik at the piano). The tenth player, turntablist and electronic musician dieb13 , works above or between the three sections, which in turn stack layers of interdependent actions on top of each other.

Soigne ta droite was Vandermark's first major ensemble recording in four years; she joined Double Arc with the Resonance Ensemble (2015). The core of the recording is the almost 25-minute foundry (for Richard Serra ) . "The thick bass lines and the solid, soaring melody of the saxophone make you feel as if you had actually wandered into a Serra sculpture," Paul Acquaro described the music. “Winding noises run through tightly forged corridors and create the feeling of being anchored in a wave-like structure, but it takes a while to get there. In the first half of the track, new ways are sought, experimented and discovered in order to act as a large ensemble. "

An Entr'acte is an intermediate act, piece of music or dance between two acts of a piece, noted Bill Meyer. René Clair's short film Entr'acte was an early piece of non-narrative cinema that was placed between two acts of a Dadaist ballet, the author continued. Soigne ta droite is both French boxing advice not to drop your right fist and a documentary by Jean-Luc Godard (1987) starring Les Rita Mitsouko , the title of which alludes to Jacques Tati's short film Soigne ton gauche (1936) .

reception

According to Paul Acquaro, who awarded and reviewed the album Soigne ta droite with the highest rating in the Free Jazz Blog , there are certainly other excellent large groups who work from the perspective of free jazz , but as in the closing moments of the track Foundry (for Richard Serra) show, "tender quasi-classical moments seem to get into pure free play, Vandermark seems to have mastered approaching a free jazz ensemble from the perspective of an orchestra." This is a complex composed music, that is delivered with a passion for free play without ever losing control.

Bill Meyer wrote in Dusted that Vandermark uses large groups like the Territory Band or the Peter Brötzmann Tentet to challenge precisely written music with passages of freedom and / or episodes of silence, and contrasts the approaches of his fellow musicians from Chicago with those of European revolutionary veterans and new radical. Nowadays the stylistic ingredients are different and the national juxtapositions more complicated, but the idea of mixing personalities and pre-existing aesthetic information to get the burn right persists. The passages by Vandermark, Harnik or Rasmussen, which become raw and complicated over the tidal waves of drums and basses, become episodes of punchy riffs that could have come from the sounds of Lagos or Addis Ababa from the 1970s.
