Fulton under construction

The Som ( Russian Сомъ , German catfish ) was the type boat of the submarine class of the same name of the Imperial Russian Navy built in Saint Petersburg .

history

In 1901, Electric Boat built the Fulton designed by John Philip Holland , the prototype of the later Plunger class ( Holland VII boat ). It was named after the inventor and shipbuilder Robert Fulton . Holland tried to win various foreign navies as buyers for its boats. The Russian naval attaché also visited the Fulton, and a Russian naval officer took part in diving trips. Although he initially assessed the combat value of the boat rather negatively and did not recommend procurement, the situation changed due to the impending confrontation with Japan in the Far East. Now the Russian admiralty was of the opinion that the fleet should be upgraded as soon as possible. Surface ships and submarines were ordered from various shipyards, mainly in Great Britain, France and the USA, but also in Germany. As part of this fleet emergency program , in order to prevent diplomatic entanglements , the Fulton was secretly partially dismantled on the deck of a cargo ship and therefore officially not delivered to Kronstadt ready for use . There it was reassembled and launched as Som on June 29, 1904 . The Russian Navy then carried out extensive tests with her in the Baltic Sea.

Calls

Russo-Japanese War

After the outbreak of war , the Som was moved to Vladivostok on the Trans-Siberian Railway and assigned to the Far Eastern submarine flotilla. In April 1905 it was ready for use.

First World War

The Som belonged to the Black Sea Fleet , later to the Baltic Fleet . After the collision with the Swedish steamer Ångermanland , the boat sank on May 10, 1916 in Swedish waters in the Åland Sea with the entire crew of 18 men.

wreck

In 2014, a submarine was discovered by the two divers Dennis Aasberg and Peter Lindberg of the wreck search organization Ocean X-team with a remote-controlled diving robot , which may be the Som . The message of the funds was from Ocean X team announced on July 27, 2015. The hatches weren't open; the remains of the crew are probably still on board. The exact position of the wreck has not yet been published, it was only stated that it should be 1.5 nautical miles off the Swedish coast, between the island of Arholma and the Svartklubben lighthouse .
