Summer night concert by the Vienna Philharmonic
Since 2008, the Vienna Philharmonic's Summer Night Concert has been the title of the Vienna Philharmonic's concert, which has been held annually in the Schönbrunn Palace Gardens in Vienna since 2004 . The concerts take place in the open air, with the stage in front of the Neptune Fountain facing the castle until 2016 and in front of the castle in 2017, and begin at dusk. The large ground floor serves as a visitor room with free entry.
Concerts
The event was held for the first time on May 25, 2004 on the occasion of the enlargement of the European Union and was initially titled “Concert for Europe”. This concert took place at the invitation of the Austrian federal government. The conductor was Bobby McFerrin and the program consisted of pieces from works of classical music by composers from eight European nations. According to the organizers, 90,000 people attended the concert, although only 30,000 were expected.
In 2005, Zubin Mehta led the program. In 2006, when the concert was postponed due to weather conditions, Plácido Domingo conducted and in 2007, when a new record attendance was set with 140,000 guests, the Vienna Philharmonic played under Valéry Gergiev .
The 2008 concert, directed by Georges Prêtre , took place for the first time under the name “Summer Night Concert ”. Daniel Barenboim conducted in 2009. In 2010, Franz Welser-Möst conducted the concert, the soloist was Yefim Bronfman on the piano. In 2011 the Russian conductor Valery Gergiev conducted and the soloist was the violinist Benjamin Schmid . As there is a close connection between the Philharmonic and Japan, the concert took place as a benefit event to support the earthquake victims of the Tōhoku earthquake in 2011 . 60 television stations broadcast it simultaneously or at different times.
The Summer Night Concert 2012 was conducted by Gustavo Dudamel . Gregor Hatala choreographed the performance of the ballet of the Vienna State Opera on a specially constructed stage in the pond in front of the Gloriette . In 2013 Lorin Maazel was a conductor. In 2014 Christoph Eschenbach was the conductor.
In 2015, the concert took place on May 14th again under the direction of Zubin Mehta, for the first time as the opening concert of the Wiener Festwochen .
In 2016 the concert took place on May 26th under the direction of Semyon Bychkov . Works by Georges Bizet , Hector Berlioz , Francis Poulenc and Maurice Ravel were performed. The siblings Katia and Marielle Labèque played the piano .
The concert was attended by over 100,000 people and broadcast by 83 TV stations in 82 countries. Live public viewings also took place in the cities of London, Madrid, Monza and Bucharest.
In 2017 the stage was turned over so that the castle can be seen in the background. This 175-year anniversary concert by the Philharmonic under the direction of Christoph Eschenbach was again taken over by over 80 television companies. Impressions from the baroque palace gardens and the Schönbrunn zoo will also be broadcast for the television audience .
The 15th edition of the concert on May 31, 2018 was conducted for the third time after 2007 and 2011 by Valery Gergiev, the soloist was Anna Netrebko .
The Summer Night Concert 2019 took place on June 20, 2019 in the Schönbrunn Palace Park with an open stage towards Gloriette. The conductor was Gustavo Dudamel and the soloist was Yuja Wang . The concert under the motto "Rhapsody in Blue" was attended by approx. 85,000 people visited and broadcast in around 80 countries.
In 2020 the concert was postponed to September 18 due to the COVID-19 pandemic . On the day of the concert, the palace park is to be closed to the public due to the pandemic, the concert can only be followed this year on ORF.
