The 2,459 meter high Sommet des Anges is a peak in the French western Alps . It is located 4 kilometers south-west of the Col de Montgenèvre in the department of Hautes-Alpes ( Region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur ) and is part of the Massif du Queyras the Cottian Alps .

geography

The Sommet des Anges, also known as the Cime du Gondran , lies at the crossroads of the three municipalities of Montgenèvre , Cervières and Val-des-Prés . The French-Italian border runs just 3.2 kilometers to the east.

The summit can be reached using the Téléski de l'Alp lift system (only in winter) and the Télésiège des Gondrans chairlift (summer and winter). The military road Chemin de Janus crosses in the immediate vicinity, but it is closed to civil traffic.

The north-northwest ridge of the mountain leads over the 2344 meter high Col Janus saddle and another 2371 meter high saddle to the Sommet de Château Jouan (or Mont Janus - 2565 meters). On its eastern side, the mountain loses only a little height, the eastern saddle of the Col oriental du Gondran lies at 2315 meters. This is where the southwest ridge of the 2650 meter high Mont Chenaillet begins . On the crête du Gondran ridge running to the west are the 2,410 meter high L'Ombilic and the Fort de l'Infernet (2,377 meters); the ridge then descends quite steeply to Briançon . The former Fort du Gondran is located at the beginning of the southern spur near the summit . The southern spur leads steeply down to the Cerveyrette .

Hydrography

The source streams of the Durance arise on the northeastern slopes of the Sommet des Anges . On the south side lies the source region of the Torrent du Villard , a right side stream of the Cerveyrette, which in turn flows into the Durance as a left tributary.

geology

Radiolarite from the Rocher de la Perdrix

The Sommet des Anges is underlain by sediments from the South Pennine Lago-Nero Unit . The Lago Nero unit is an internal, the Liguria-Piedmont ocean entstammende Ophiolithdecke that during the Alpine orogenesis to the west via the external Rochebrune unit was pushed (both tectonic units are Piemontzone of Penninikums). The ceiling of the Chenaillet ophiolite floats on it . Immediately at the summit there are flat black slates from the Middle Cretaceous to the east . In the direction of the Osteinsattelung ( Replatte du Gondran ) brown, pebbly and black schisty limestones follow the formation de la Replatte from the Lower Cretaceous . At the Rocher de la Perdrix (2375 meters) white, pelagic Malm limestone and radiolarite can be found. The formation de la Replatte then follows again, which is finally crossed by serpentinites of the Chenaillet ophioliths along the Gondran fault at the foot of the southwest ridge pulling down from Mont Chenaillet . Overall, we are dealing with a west-vergent, pointed anticline structure , the axis of which is formed by the Upper Jurassic radiolarites. The sediments have also internally Kleinfältelung with westvergenten also fold axes.

The ceiling face of the Lago Nero unit ends shortly before reaching L'Ombilic . Further to the northwest, the ceiling is cut off by the northeast-striking Janus Fault - a right-handed sideshift .

Attachment

The Fort du Gondran with the Sommet de Château Jouan (2565 meters) in the background

Just below the summit is the former Fort du Gondran. Next to the fort there are a number of fortified positions that were built from the beginning of the 19th century to defend the high altitude around Briançon.

Already under Louis XIV , the eastern border of France - starting with the strongholds of Vauban up to the Maginot Line - was fortified more and more. In this context, several barracks and a massive fort were built in the summit area of the Sommet des Anges. With the approach of the Second World War, these facilities were provided with five new underground bunkers ( French ouvrages ). In 1944 there was fighting between German-Italian and French-Moroccan associations.

Sports

In winter, good ski slopes allow you to descend from the Sommet des Anges north to the valley station and on to Montgenèvre. In the summer months, these transform into hiking trails and slopes for mountain bikers.
