Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur [ pʀɔˌvɑ̃sˌalpkotdaˈzyːʀ ] (abbreviated PACA ) is a region on the Mediterranean coast in southeast France . It consists of the departments Alpes-de-Haute-Provence , Alpes-Maritimes , Bouches-du-Rhône , Hautes-Alpes , Var and Vaucluse . The region has an area of ​​31,400 km² and a population of 5,030,890 (as of January 1, 2017). The capital of the region is Marseille .

The region is bordered by the Mediterranean in the south, Italy in the east and the valley or the delta of the Rhone river in the west. In the north it borders on the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region ; these two regions divide the French Alps equally between themselves.

Apart from the Alps, the landscape of the region is divided into Provence and the coast known as the Côte d'Azur and the French Riviera.

history

With the establishment of the regions in France in 1960, the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur-Corse region was created, which was renamed Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur in 1970 after the separation of Corsica . In 1972 the region received the status of an établissement public under the direction of a regional prefect. The decentralization laws of 1982 gave the regions the status of collectivités territoriales ( territorial authorities ), which until then had only been enjoyed by the municipalities and the départements . In 1986 the regional councils were directly elected for the first time. Since then, the region's powers vis-à-vis the central government in Paris have been gradually expanded.

Regional council

Result of the election of the regional council on December 13, 2015:

• List Christian Estrosi (Union de la Droite from LR , UDI and MoDem ): 54.78% = 1,073,516 votes, 81 seats
• List Marion Maréchal-Le Pen ( FN ): 45.22% = 886,177 votes, 42 seats

To prevent the Front National from winning, the Socialist Party withdrew its list after the first round of voting and called for the election of Christian Estrosi's list.

economy

Compared with the European Union , the region achieved a gross domestic product index of 104.6 in 2006 (EU-27 = 100, expressed in purchasing power standards ). In 2017 the unemployment rate was 10.2%.
