action

The story of Jesus is told from his birth through his years as an itinerant preacher and healer to his condemnation, crucifixion and resurrection.

background

In 2013, the ten-part miniseries The Bible was created under the direction of executive producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey and with the participation of the History Channel , which in March 2013 achieved record ratings of up to 13 million viewers per episode in the USA. In this series, the most famous episodes of the Old and New Testaments were reconstructed with the help of game scenes, including the life story of Jesus in episodes 6 to 9. This series could be seen at Easter 2014 in Germany on VOX .

Due to the success of the series, Burnett and Downey (she also embodies Mary, the mother of Jesus in the series) decided to bring the life of the carpenter from Nazareth to the big screen. Scenes that could not be seen in the series were added and the narrative structure was slightly changed in order to ensure a film lasting more than two hours.

The main role is the 32-year-old Portuguese actor Diogo Morgado .

Gross profit

On the night of its release, the film grossed $ 1.2 million in North America. It was estimated by Box Office Mojo that the film will gross in $ 27.5 million in total on its weekend launch, up from $ 26.5 million in the end.

As of May 13, 2014, the film had grossed just under 60 million US dollars in the USA and over 8 million US dollars abroad.

criticism

The film received mostly negative reviews. At Rotten Tomatoes , only 21% of reviews are positive, out of a total of 66 reviews. The average rating is 4.7 / 10. In the critical consensus it says: “The awe-inspiring may have its justification, but it does not meet cinematic demands; Son of God is too blank and awkward to inspire passion. ” Metacritic gave the film a 37/100 rating based on 25 reviews.
