Life

Sönam Gyatsho received the title "Dalai Lama" from the Mongolian ruler Altan Khan in 1578 after he had established Buddhist teachings in the Mongolian Empire . "Dalai" is the translation of the Tibetan ordination name Gya-tso into Mongolian and means "ocean". The two predecessors Sonam Gyatsho were given the same name posthumously, so that Sonam Gyatsho went down in history as the third Dalai Lama. He was also the third abbot of Drepung .
