Andreas Gruschke
Andreas Gruschke (born April 16, 1960 in Blumenfeld ; † January 30, 2018 ) was a German author , photographer and Tibetologist with a scientific background as a geographer , sinologist and ethnologist .
Career
After attending high school in Singen and doing his community service, Gruschke studied from 1981 to 1990 in Aachen and Freiburg . During this time he also spent two months studying in East Asia and Southeast Asia and also completed a year-long study of the Chinese language at the Beijing University of Language and Culture in the People's Republic of China in 1984/85 . In 1990 he completed his studies in Freiburg with a Magister Artium . His master's thesis was published under the title “ New land development in arid regions of the People's Republic of China and its importance for the food supply of the Chinese population ”.
In 1985/86 he taught at the Shanxi Agricultural University in Taigu ( Shanxi , People's Republic of China), and in 1992/93 as a visiting professor at the Kangweon National University in Chuncheon ( South Korea ).
From July 2004 to June 2012, Gruschke was a research associate at the University of Leipzig, responsible for research work within the special research area “Difference and Integration” on nomads in Eastern Tibet . In 2009 he received his doctorate in development geography from the University of Leipzig. From November 2012 Gruschke held a research professorship at the "Institute for Studies on Social Development and (Economic) Development of Western China" ( Shehui fazhan yu xibu kaifa yanjiuyuan ) at Sichuan University in Chengdu .
Andreas Gruschke died after a short, serious illness at the age of 57. In an obituary, the University of Leipzig characterized him as "one of the few German geographers who was internationally known as a proven expert on China and Tibet and who was highly valued for his expertise and commitment".
Services
As early as 1987, Gruschke worked as a freelance author and photo journalist with a focus on Tibet, the Himalayan region , the Silk Road and East Asia, gave lectures and seminars at the adult education center in Freiburg and other adult education institutions, and also carried out self-designed study trips to East Asia. Even after completing his studies, he took numerous study trips to Southeast Asia , China , Korea , Central Asia and, in particular, longer research stays in the highlands of Tibet .
Gruschke has published numerous books and articles mainly on Tibetan culture, including pioneering work on monasteries in the eastern Tibetan areas of Amdo and Kham . Other books and reports deal with the Silk Road, China, Korea and the Himalayas, as well as two illustrated books about his home region: the Hegau and the Upper Rhine .
