Song Du-yul (born October 12, 1944 in Tokyo , Japan ) is a German-Korean sociologist and adjunct professor at the University of Münster . He works for an understanding and rapprochement between North and South Korea .

Training and work

Song Du-yul was born in Tokyo to Korean parents. In 1967 he graduated from Seoul National University with a degree in philosophy and came to Germany to study . In 1972 he did his doctorate in Frankfurt under Jürgen Habermas on Hegel and Max Weber 's view of Asia . Later he took up the "system-immanent research approach" of Peter Christian Ludz . After his habilitation in 1982 he became professor of sociology at the University of Münster and also taught in Berlin , Heidelberg and Stockholm .

Political activity

In the 1960s, Song Du-yul turned against the military dictatorship under Park Chung-hee in South Korea. He began to analyze North Korea using the "systemic research approach" and traveled this state frequently.

Song Du-yul has been a German citizen since 1993.

Since 1995 he has organized several conferences in Beijing , in which scientists from North and South Korea participated.

On September 23, 2003, he traveled to South Korea for the first time in 37 years to give lectures and to receive an honorary doctorate from Chonnam University in Gwangju . On arrival, Song was arrested immediately. The government of Roh Moo-hyun has made reconciliation with the North on its flags, but the draconian laws from the time of the military dictatorship, which prohibit all contact with North Korea and the demand for a reunification of North and South Korea, are still in today Force.

According to media reports, he was held in pretrial detention in a solitary cell without a chair or bed, without heating or air conditioning and with lights around the clock. The indictment was withheld from him until the trial began, and Song initially had no access to a lawyer.

The South Korean secret service accused him of having been a member of the Labor Party of Korea since the 1970s and, most recently, a member of the Politburo, for which no evidence was presented in court. In April 2004, he was sentenced to seven years in prison under the National Security Act of 1948, which goes directly back to the security laws of the former Japanese colonial rule.

South Korean television showed recordings of songs attending Kim Il-sung's funeral in 1994.

Jürgen Habermas, Günter Grass and other German intellectuals as well as Amnesty International campaigned for his release.

Song was released on July 21, 2004 after the Seoul Supreme Court suspended his sentence. At the beginning of August 2004 he returned to Germany.
