Sonny Igoe

Owen Joseph "Sonny" Igoe (born October 8, 1923 in Jersey City , New Jersey , † March 28, 2012 in Ridgewood , New Jersey) was an American jazz drummer, band leader and music teacher.

Live and act

Igoe had lessons from Henry Adler and Bill West and at the age of 18 won a drummer competition initiated by Gene Krupa . After his military service from 1942 to 1946, his musical career began with Tommy Reed (1946/47), Les Elgart (1947) and Ina Ray Hutton (1948). That year he was a member of Benny Goodman's short-lived bebop formation . In the early 1950s he played a. a. in Woody Hermans Third Herd (1950–1952) and also participated in his session with Charlie Parker . He then belonged to the Charlie Ventura Quintet from 1953 to 1955 and then to Billy Maxted's band. Also worked with Tony Bennett ( Cloud 7 , 1955) and Chuck Wayne ( String Fever , 1957). In his further career he mainly worked as a studio musician and as a music teacher; his students included u. a. Sue Evans and Robert Last . In the early 1980s he was co-leader of a big band with Dick Meldonian , with whom he recorded several albums for the Progressive label .

His son is the drummer Tommy Igoe.
