The Sonora cartel ( Spanish: Cártel de Sonora ) was a Mexican drug cartel that emerged in the late 1980s. With his brothers Jorge and Genaro as partners, Miguel Angel "El Chapito" Caro Quintero was the leading head of the organization. Along with the Colima cartel and the Milenio cartel , the Sonora cartel became a branch of the Sinaloa cartel in the mid-2000s .

history

The organization's roots lie in the Guadalajara cartel , which collapsed after the arrest of its co-founder Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo in 1989. After Gallardo was arrested, disputes broke out among the padróns. Since each of the five remaining drug lords from Tijuana , Ciudad Juárez , Tamaulipas , Sinaloa and also from Sonora wanted to secure increased influence, the Federación finally broke up and several small groups emerged that still exist today: Sinaloa cartel, golf cartel , Tijuana cartel , Juarez cartel .

The Sonoran Cartel operated from Hermosillo , Agua Prieta , Guadalajara and Culiacán , as well as from the states of San Luis Potosí , Sinaloa and Sonora . It had cocaine trading relationships with the Cali Cartel , growing and distributing marijuana , and transporting and distributing methamphetamine . Most of the imports were in California , Arizona , Texas and Nevada .

In 1992, Miguel Caro Quintero was arrested for tax evasion, but was acquitted. He was arrested again in Los Mochis in December 2001 and remained in custody in Mexico until February 2009. It is believed that despite his imprisonment, he was still the cartel leader. Prior to his arrest, however, he repeatedly stated that he was innocent and accused the DEA of being in a vengeance against him over the alleged role of his brother Rafael Caro Quintero in the death of DEA special agent Enrique Camarena aka "Kiki". In late 2009, Miguel Caro Quintero was sentenced to 17 years in prison by a US federal court in Colorado for marijuana trafficking and organized crime.
