The late carnation ( Dianthus serotinus ), also called late spring carnation , sand spring carnation and late blooming carnation , is a species of carnation ( Dianthus ). It is a rare Pannonian floral element .

Vegetative characteristics

The late carnation is a perennial herbaceous plant that usually reaches heights of 20 to 30 centimeters. The grass-green stem is almost stem -round. In Austria, the late spring carnation occurs only in the nature reserve Sandberge near Oberweiden in Lower Austria on sandy steppes and sandy hills in the colline height range . In Austria the species is considered critically endangered.

Nomenclature and systematics

The first description of Dianthus serotinus carried out in 1804 by Franz Adam of Wallenstein and Pál Kitaibel in Descriptiones et Icones Plantarum Rariorum Hungariae , p 188. A synonym for Dianthus serotinus Waldst. & Kit. is Dianthus hungaricus Pers.

The late carnation ( Dianthus serotinus ) belongs to the species group around the feather carnation ( Dianthus plumarius ).
