The late pipe bush ( Philadelphus incanus ) is a species of the hydrangea family (Hydrangeaceae). Its natural range is in several provinces of China .

description

The late pipe shrub is a 1.5 to 3.5 meter high shrub . The bark of older twigs is brown and later flakes off in narrow strips. Young, flowering branches are weak, the long shoots are densely hairy. The leaves are simple and have a 5 to 10 millimeter long petiole. The leaf blade is ovate to oblong, 6 to 12.5 inches long and 8 to 10 inches wide, pointed with a broad wedge-shaped or rounded base and serrated leaf margin. The upper side of the leaf is sparsely hairy or glabrous, the underside, pressed tightly, with bristly hairs.

The flowers are five to seven rarely to eleven in hairy clusters . The individual flowers are 2.5 to 3 centimeters wide and without fragrance. The calyx is bell-shaped and densely hairy whitish. The corolla is white and broadly bell-shaped to flat. 30 to 35 stamens are formed which can reach a length of 1 centimeter. The stylus is about 5 millimeters long and divided at the tip. The fruits are obovate capsule fruits 7 to 9 millimeters long and 4 to 7 millimeters wide . The seeds are 1.5 to 2.5 millimeters in size. The species blooms from May to June, the fruits ripen from July to August.

Distribution and ecology

The natural range is in the Chinese provinces of Henan , Hubei , Hunan , Shaanxi , Shanxi and Sichuan . Deposits in Fujian and Hebei are uncertain. The species grows in floodplains and river banks at heights of 1200 to 1700 meters on moderately dry to fresh, weakly acidic to strongly alkaline, sandy, gravelly or loamy, nutrient-rich soils in sunny locations. It loves warmth and is usually frost hardy.

Systematics and research history

The late pipe bush is a species from the genus of the pipe bushes ( Philadelphus ) in the hydrangea family (Hydrangeaceae), subfamily Hydrangeoideae, tribe Philadelpheae. The species was first described in the garden flora by Emil Bernhard Koehne in 1896 .

There are three varieties :

  • Philadelphus incanus var. Baileyi Rehder with a sparsely hairy underside of the leaf, inflorescences of 5 to 7 flowers with a short spindle of 2 to 3 millimeters. The distribution area is in Henan and Shaanxi in thickets at an altitude of about 1600 meters.
  • Philadelphus incanus var. Incanus with a densely hairy underside of the leaf, inflorescences with 7 to 11 flowers and a long spindle of 4 to 7 centimeters. The distribution area is in Henan, Hubei, Shaanxi, Shanxi and Sichuan in thickets at an altitude of about 1200 to 1700 meters.
  • Philadelphus incanus var. Mitsai (SY Hu) SM Hwang with sparsely hairy underside of the leaf, inflorescences with 7 to 11 flowers and a long spindle of 4 to 7 centimeters. It occurs in thickets in Henan and Hunan.

use

The late pipe shrub is rarely used as an ornamental plant because of its decorative flowers.
