history

The Hudson's Bay Company , headquartered in Fort Nisqually, controlled the region until 1863. Maps and records of the Company show the subsidiary Pugets Sound Agricultural Company as a cattle, grain and sheep farm at a “Spanueh Station” on the south and east banks of a “Spanueh” Lake ". Spanueh is the spelling of the Hudson Bay Company for the indigenous Lushootseed -term spadue who "dug roots" means and terms of Camassia increases and other plants whose roots are edible. The Lushootseed experienced the loss of a number of nasal consonants in the 1880s, so "Spanueh" is simply a transcription of the previously pronounced term "Spadue".

The first white settler to receive a piece of land by the lake, Henry de la Bushalier, tried to rename the lake after himself. However, this fell from the public eye with his death a year later. In 1890 the area was renamed "Lake Park" as a planned parish by the Lake Park Land, Railway and Improvement Company , which bought all the land in the vicinity of the lake and built a railway line to their "Mecca of recreation" on the shores of "Spanaway Lake" let build. When Mount Rainier National Park was founded in 1899, tourists should take the train to its final stop in Lake Park and from there take a two-day trip to Mount Rainier to make Spanaway the actual "gateway" to Mount Rainier . The trip was made by stagecoach , an overnight stay in Eatonville was planned; the route was in operation until early 1893.

Although the United States Board on Geographic Names recognized the community as "Lake Park" in 1897, the decision was reversed in 1970 with a long delay and the commonly used name Spanaway (Spanueh) was used.
