The Sparkasse Niederösterreich Mitte West AG is the largest savings bank in Lower Austria with its headquarters in St. Pölten .

The company, founded in 1854, currently operates (as of 2019) 34 branches in Lower Austria. The sole shareholder of the Sparkasse is the “Privatstiftung Sparkasse Niederösterreich”. Sparkasse Niederösterreich Mitte West AG is a member of the Austrian Savings Banks Association and the liability association of Austrian savings banks .

history

The Sparkasse Niederösterreich Mitte West Aktiengesellschaft was established in 1854 as the "Association of the Sparkasse in the City of St. Pölten" following an order from the local council. The statutes were drawn up by district court president Johann Ranzoni, notary Anton Seehann and the later mayor of St. Pölten, Johann Ofner , so that the constituent general assembly could take place on January 18, 1854.

In addition to the ongoing social commitment of the Sparkasse, the area of today's Sparkasse Park was acquired in 1880, the "Sparkassenhaus am Domplatz" built by Eugen Sehnal was built by 1885 and from 1886 the Sparkasse was able to call the Kaiserwald area its own. In 1894, the Sparkasse supported the renovation of the city theater, the design of the city halls, the construction of a fire station and the new construction and furnishing of the hospital through donations .

The outbreak of the First World War ended an era in urban development and the history of the Sparkasse. Only after the collapse of the monarchy in 1922 could business develop again. Despite the difficult times during the annexation of Austria to the German Reich, the Sparkasse was able to expand its regional area. In 1940 the Sparkasse Wilhelmsburg and in 1942 the Sparkassen Rabenstein and Kirchberg were merged with St. Pölten.

After the end of the Second World War and with the start of reconstruction, many things also changed at the Sparkasse. In 1954, Kommerzialrat Anton Öckher was elected senior curator and remained so until shortly before his death on August 3, 1959. At the beginning of his term in office, the Sparkasse celebrated its 100th anniversary. On January 19, 1954, changes were made to the statutes, according to which the number of association members could be doubled to 100. The branch network was continuously expanded in the face of increasing competition. The Sparkasse opened branches in St. Georgen , St. Pölten-Nord, St. Pölten-Süd, Wagram , Pottenbrunn , Markersdorf-Haindorf and Viehofen . In addition, further branches were established in Ober-Grafendorf , Stattersdorf , Spratzern , Harland , at Wiener Tor and at Schwaighof .

When the new Savings Banks Act came into force in 1979, the legal basis was significantly changed. The Sparkasse association in the city of St. Pölten became a separate legal entity alongside the Sparkasse, which had adopted the company name "Sparkasse - Region St. Pölten Lower Austria Sparkasse and Bank" in 1980.

In the following years, the catchment area of the Sparkasse expanded through further mergers: 1991 with Sparkasse Ybbs , 1992 with Sparkasse Lilienfeld and 1997 with Sparkasse Waidhofen an der Ybbs .

The old style Vereinssparkasse was converted into a stock corporation at the founding meeting on June 29, 2000 , after an amendment to the Savings Bank Act had created the legal framework. With the declaration of foundation dated September 4, 2000, the private foundation Sparkasse Niederösterreich was established, which is 100 percent owner of the Sparkasse. In the same year the board of directors succeeded in re-acquiring the savings bank between Domplatz and Herrengasse, which had been sold in 1977 after the main establishment was built. After an architectural competition, the representative building from the early days was able to return to its original purpose.

With the contribution of the Sparkasse der Stadt Hainfeld in 2001 and the acquisition of 95% of the Sparkasse Melk, Mank-Kilb, Bank AG by the private foundation Sparkasse Niederösterreich in 2003, the sphere of influence in the central area of Lower Austria was significantly expanded.

Foundation, endowment

The private foundation Sparkasse Niederösterreich was established with a declaration of foundation on September 4, 2000 and is the sole shareholder of the Sparkasse. The association of the Privatstiftung Sparkasse Niederösterreich exercises the rights of the founder through the association assembly.

The purpose of the Privatstiftung Sparkasse Niederösterreich is, among other things, to promote regional ties by supporting regional measures in the catchment area of Sparkasse Niederösterreich Mitte West AG. Funding is primarily provided in the areas of economy and society, culture and education, science and art, research and technology, and the environment and health.

Charitable projects

The Sparkasse is currently promoting education with an amount of around 65,000 euros within its catchment area as part of a school cooperation.

At the initiative of the state capital St. Pölten, the Sparkasse has agreed, within the framework of its social skills, to participate in the Schutzwerkstätte Ges.mbH as a founding partner and continues to hold the stake.
