The Erzgebirgsstadion is a football stadium in the Saxon city of Aue-Bad Schlema . It is the home ground of the FC Erzgebirge Aue football club . As part of the renovation work, which was completed at the end of 2017, the stands for a pure football stadium were built close to the edge of the field. The capacity is currently 16,485 spectators.

history

The stadium was opened on May 27, 1928 as the municipal stadium in the Lößnitz Valley at the foot of the Zeller Mountain and was a venue for a wide variety of sports. In the post-war period , the stadium could only be used to a very limited extent, since units of the Red Army used it for training and competitions. From 1949 the SDAG Wismut , meanwhile the largest employer in the region, was the sponsor of the facility.

In 1950, a new arena was built on the site of the old stadium, which was no longer able to cope with the increased demands, in just four months. The Otto Grotewohl Stadium was inaugurated on August 20, 1950 in the presence of the eponymous GDR Prime Minister Otto Grotewohl with a friendly against Waggonbau Dessau (3: 3). The stadium had 22,000 seats as well as competition facilities for athletes, swimmers and ball players. In 1958, when the stadium was the home of SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt , which was very successful at the time , further renovations were carried out, including increasing the capacity to 25,000 spectators.

From 1986 to 1992 the stadium was comprehensively repaired and modernized so that it now also met international requirements. On October 13, 1989, the premiere of the new floodlight system took place in the league game against 1. FC Magdeburg (0-0) in front of 26,000 spectators . In October 1991 the Treuhandanstalt transferred the stadium site, which had previously been owned by SDAG Wismut, to the then Aue district . On November 26, 1991, the name was changed to Erzgebirgsstadion . In 2004 further improvements were made. The track got a new surface in the club color purple. Furthermore, turf heating was installed under the playing field. Furthermore, from which it was Park stadium of FC Schalke 04 acquired video wall installed. The stadium's back straight was rebuilt and roofed over during the 2010 summer break.

As part of the partnership between FC Erzgebirge Aue and the Sparkassen Aue-Schwarzenberg , Erzgebirge and Mittleres Erzgebirge based in the Erzgebirgskreis , the facility was officially renamed the Sparkassen-Erzgebirgsstadion on March 16, 2011 . The association will receive half a million euros annually until 2020. The sponsorship contract with the Erzgebirgssparkasse was extended to 2023 in the 2016/17 season. This contract does not include the rights to the stadium name, so the stadium has been renamed the Erzgebirgsstadion again since the 2017/18 season .

modification

The stadium was converted into a pure football stadium by the end of 2017. On June 17, 2015, the district council of the Erzgebirgskreis gave its commitment to renovate the facility. Seventy MPs voted yes and ten no. There were also ten abstentions. The costs are calculated at 19.86 million euros. FC Erzgebirge Aue paid a lease of 250,000 euros per year in the third division . In the 2nd Bundesliga, the total increased to 350,000 euros. The Sparkassen-Erzgebirgsstadion is to offer space for 16,485 spectators after the completion of the construction work. For this, the owner, the Erzgebirgskreis, took out a loan of 15 million euros.

On December 11, 2015, the renovation work officially began with the demolition of the west curve. The west stand was demolished by the end of November 2015, the structural work started in spring 2016 and the erection of the standing space blocks began. The second step was the construction of the north stand with the integrated main building. From spring 2017 the old south stand was demolished and in the months that followed, the new building was erected with the guest block in the east. Finally, the redesign of the outdoor facilities takes place. The entire spectator area is covered. At least 10,000 spectator seats should always be available during the entire renovation period.

On January 26, 2018, the newly built stadium was handed over to FC Erzgebirge Aue after completion of the third construction phase. There were only small, weather-independent works on the plan from the construction project. The Erzgebirgskreis as the owner has invested 19.8 million euros in the new football arena. The construction was completed on time without increasing costs. The first match with use of all grandstands took place on January 28, 2018 between FCE and Eintracht Braunschweig . The home side's 3-1 defeat saw 9,850 spectators.

The official inauguration took place on July 29, 2018 with an open day and the opening game against FC Schalke 04 . 15,250 spectators came to the stadium festival and the new home side defeated the Royal Blues 1-0 (0-0). The first competitive game in the stadium after the opening was on August 12th that year against the newly promoted 1. FC Magdeburg .
