The Speckenberg is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony town of Salzgitter .

The nature reserve with the sign NSG BR 112 is 8.2  hectares in size. It is completely part of the FFH area "Salzgitterscher Höhenzug (southern part)". The area has been a nature reserve since August 2, 1991. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the city of Salzgitter.

The nature reserve is located southeast of Salzgitter-Bad on the southern central part of the Salzgitter ridge . Here, on the edge of the ridge, a semi-dry lawn has been preserved, which was created by formerly extensive grazing. The semi-dry lawn is regularly grazed with Galloway cattle and sheep for maintenance . Here are e.g. B. Real cowslip , various sedges , orchids such as some ragwort species as well as swallowweed and willow-leaved elephant , which form larger stocks, can be found. Shrubbery and hedges are formed by sloes , hawthorns and wild roses , but also privet , buckthorn , dogwood and eu cone.

Of particular importance is a steep slope in the southwest of the protected area, in which character species of the rock gravel and rock band society have settled on skeletal soil . The eastern part of the nature reserve is forested. As a special feature, some older wild pears can be found here. Bouquet-blooming wild flowers and blue-red stone seeds can be found in clear spots in the forest .

The nature reserve is the habitat of various butterflies , including the checkerboard butterfly , which inhabits the wooded areas and the area of ​​the forest edge, as well as various beetles , grasshoppers , bedbugs and ants .

A path that can be entered runs through the southern area of ​​the nature reserve.
