Heerter See and Heerter Strauchholz is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony town of Salzgitter .

description

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG BR 061 is around 323  hectares in size. It includes the 272 hectare EU bird sanctuary "Heerter See", which has been part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas since 1992 . The nature reserve has been under protection since April 20, 2017. The 272 hectare nature reserve "Klärtich III bei Salzgitter-Heerte", which was designated as of October 29, 1984 and was congruent with the EU bird sanctuary "Heerter See", was absorbed. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the city of Salzgitter.

The nature reserve is located east of the Gebhardshagen district of Salzgitter and south of the Heerte district . It places the Heerter See , a former clarification pond, with its bank zones and parts of the Heerter bush wood adjacent to the south under protection. The Heerter See was built in 1951 as a pit water - and as a dumping pond for the absorption of the accumulating sludge transport water in an oak-hornbeam forest (the Heerter shrub wood). It was used from 1953 to 1976.

The dam of the pond is 5.8 km long, at its highest point 20 m high and at its bottom up to 213 m wide. The sludge discharged from the ore processing at Calbecht was distributed by a pumping station over a ring main. The clear water was returned from a pump house on the pond through a 500 mm pipeline for reuse in the treatment plant. During the operating period up to October 1976 about 33 million m³ of ore sludge was deposited. The water introduced was very salty. The lake had a salt content of 20 per thousand at times. After the lake was no longer used, the salt content sank to 3 per thousand. The Heerter See is connected to the clarification ponds I and II (today Reihersee ) and the Amtsteich in Gebhardshagen via a pipeline system from the time the lake was used as a clarification pond. The lake is still supplied with water today via the pipeline system. More water flows into the lake through surface water from the adjacent Feldmark, in particular from the mud ditch in the south. To prevent overflow, there is a fixed overflow over which water in the north of the former clarifier Eich extending Fuhse can be derived.

The 120 to 160 hectare water surface, depending on the water level, is surrounded by a muddy bank area and extensive reed beds . A central dam ran through the lake, which was broken through with a ditch in 2007. Growing trees can be found on the walls of the former clarification pond. In the south, part of the former forest was included in the nature reserve. With the designation of the "Heerter See and Heerter Strauchholz" nature reserve, further parts of the Heerter Strauchholz and two agricultural areas in the southwest, between the Heerter Strauchholz and the district road 21 and a former embankment that went northwest into the walling of the former Settling ponds are included in the protected area. There has been no forestry use in the forest area since 2007. The predominant tree species are oak, beech and hornbeam.

The former clearing pond has developed into a valuable wetland and is a breeding habitat and resting and wintering area for many bird species. Over 300 species of birds have been identified in the nature reserve, including over 110 species that are threatened. So come u. a. Bittern , little bittern , water rail , coot , Spotted Crake , red-necked grebe , grebes , bearded tit , pond - and Reed Warbler , Savi's warbler , but also oriole , black tern , marsh harrier , red and black kite and the shorebirds plover and Greenshank ago. Around 90 species of birds breed in the nature reserve. Sea eagles and ospreys use the area for foraging. A nesting aid was set up for the osprey in early 2014.

During the bird migration, large groups of cranes rest in the shallow water areas. The area also serves as a resting and wintering area for various ducks and geese . So were spoon , haddock , spit , Krick- , whistling , Knäk- , Gadwall , Tableware and tufted duck and gray and bean goose observed.

Amphibians are z. B. represented by sea frogs and crested newts. The green toad is also at home here on the western edge of its range in Lower Saxony. To upgrade the area as a habitat for green toad, u. a. In the winter of 2009, small bodies of water were created in the reed areas of the Heerter See. The Heerter See is home to large stocks of chandelier algae , of which the rough chandelier alga dominates. The forest areas are habitat u. a. of black , gray and green woodpecker and Dove .

A hiking trail runs around the lake, mainly on the walling of the former clearing pond within the boundaries of the nature reserve. On the north and south banks there are observation platforms from which the sea can be seen, as well as information boards.

Since the beginning of 2007, a total of almost 320 hectares of the nature reserve have belonged to the non-profit NABU Foundation for National Natural Heritage , which was donated by Preussag Immobilien GmbH (PSI). The lake had previously been offered for sale to the city of Salzgitter along with other areas. The city council decided against the purchase due to the possible pollution of the groundwater and surface water and the increased heavy metal and boron content in the bulk material of the dam body. The nature reserve is looked after by the Salzgitter local group of the Naturschutzbund Deutschland .
