Spessart is a district of Ettlingen with around 2900 inhabitants and is located on the edge of the northern Black Forest .

history

Around the year 1100 some men left their home community Ettlingen and felled the first oak trees on the site of today's village, from which they built their homesteads. The Spessartians have always used the dense oak forest to graze their pigs in it. This is probably where the nickname “ boar ” for the Spessarter comes from , although there are also other interpretations. They called the first settlement, which was surrounded by oak and beech forest, in which one could often hear the hammering of green and great spotted woodpeckers , Spechteßhard = woodpecker forest . The name changes quite often, up to today's Spessart.

Politically, the area in which the first Spessartians cleared the forest belonged to the Franconian Ufgau, which stretched from the Oos to the Alb . The landlords of the woodpecker forest were the Counts of Eberstein . The sovereign was the respective Margrave of Baden . Over the course of 100 years, the small settlement in the woodpecker forest grew into a village. In 1292, Margrave Friedrich II gave the Herrenalb monastery two mills near Fürstenzell with the right to ban various places, including Spessart with all rights, benefits and freedoms. In this deed of donation, Spessart = Spehshart is written, which is the first documentary mention of the village.

In the 12th and 13th centuries, various noble families had acquired goods from the surrounding area. So in Spessart, the gentlemen from Remchingen and Öwisheim . Three other families became better known in the history of Spessart: the lords of Rüppurr , von Upstadt and von Roßwag . These families shared the property of Spessart in the 13th century. The village had grown larger and had its own bailiwick . One half of the village was in the hands of the lords of Ubstadt, and from them the lords of Rosswag had it as a fief . In addition, the Hirsau Monastery owned a farm in Spessart, which was later still called the Hirsau estate . It stayed that way until 1294, when these gentlemen sold their property to the Frauenalb monastery . So Spessart became a monastery village until secularization in 1803. For a full 500 years it was one of the monastery villages that belonged to the monastery area or monastery office with all goods, people, rights and accessories. The abbess was the rightful mistress of the village; the monastery coat of arms can still be seen today on the Zehntscheune (Hauptstrasse 42).

In earlier years there were only a few military events in Spessart. The Peasants' War of 1525 did not stop at the monastery gate. It was worse in the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648) and in the wars of the French King Louis XIV . The wars of the 17th and 18th centuries brought hardship and poverty to the region. For example, the Spanish followed by the War of the Polish Succession . Traces of this are still visible today along the Ettlinger line (jumps in the upper forest). All these wars have had a devastating effect on Spessart. The population fell considerably.

In 1802 the Frauenalb monastery gave the community its own parish, in 1803 Spessart became Baden. In September 1966, the 700th anniversary of the political community was celebrated. In 1972, the Spessarter voted for incorporation into Ettlingen . Since March 1, 1972, Spessart has been a district of the large district town of Ettlingen.

Spessart today

Spessart has developed into an industrial workers' village over the years. Many Spessart residents still commute daily to the cities of Ettlingen or Karlsruhe.

In addition, Spessart (together with the surrounding villages) has become a popular local recreation area. When driving through the village, the varied and well-tended front gardens and the flower-adorned houses are particularly striking. To this end, Spessart took part very successfully in the federal and state competition “Our village should become more beautiful”. The many walking and hiking trails in the nearby forest are popular with visitors.

The present day townscape has changed significantly. New building areas were opened up, so that Spessart has grown to around 3000 inhabitants today. For comparison: in 1971 there were 1700 inhabitants.

The place now has two kindergartens and a primary school . There is also a modern church, with today's local administration located in the small, former Spessart church. A festival area was laid out behind the school for events. A commercial area with a supermarket was built to the side of this and opened in spring 2005. A club house is available for the local clubs, and the Spessart gymnastics and sports club has created a sports facility on the edge of the forest.

politics

With the local election on June 25, 2014, the Spessart local council was also re-elected, with the CDU emerging as the strongest parliamentary group. She won seven of the ten seats. One seat went to the SPD and two to the Greens .

Elke Werner (CDU) has been the head of the village since September 2004.

Due to the false choice of part of town , Spessart was represented with two votes in the Ettlingen municipal council until this special municipal policy regulation was abolished by the city of Ettlingen in October 2007. On April 27, 2008, was in Ettlingen referendum on continuation of the spurious part of local election carried out, which was answered by the Spessarter voters to more than 80 percent "yes". However, the decision on the total number of eligible voters did not achieve the necessary quorum , so that the bogus local election was abolished. In this context, it was feared that no more Spessarters would join the entire council in the future. This was not confirmed after the mayor Elke Werner and her first deputy Rolf ceilingbach were re-elected to the local council with good results.
