The Spessartwiesen have been a nature reserve in the Bavarian Spessart in the area of the Lohr river and its tributaries since 2001 .
geography
The western Spessartwiesen lie in the Lohrbachtal between Heinrichsthal and Heigenbrücken in the district of Aschaffenburg . Individual areas in the Bächlesgrund are also under nature protection. The lower Lohrbachtal and the Kalte Grund in the Main-Spessart district form the southern part of the nature reserve. Almost the entire valley of the Aubaches and the Birklergrund surrounds the area. The eastern Spessart meadows are in the Lohr valley around Frammersbach .
fauna
In the valleys of the Lohrbach and the Aubach there are still unobstructed, richly structured and wooded streams, which in large areas carry clear water, but unfortunately also critically to heavily polluted water after the sewage treatment plant of the municipality of Wiesen has run down. For many living beings this is an important habitat that has become rare. In the rapidly flowing water, in areas not polluted by sewage, primarily fish such as the brown trout , which is on the red list of animal species threatened with extinction, and the endangered Mühlkoppe live . Numerous smaller, less conspicuous animal species, such as the river flea shrimp , quiver or stone fly larvae, also occur in the streams of the Spessart meadows. The pearl mussel was so common in the 19th century that it was used by farmers as chicken feed. Today the mussel is practically extinct in the Spessartwiesen, but attempts are being made to reintroduce them. The first efforts are already underway to make the noble crab at home again. The clear water of the Spessart brooks is also preferred by the brook lamprey . With its length of about 15 centimeters it is reminiscent of a small eel, but does not belong to the species of fish, but to the group of round-mouthed people and is the only one of its kind in Germany. The meadows of the nature reserve often contain the light and dark poppy-buds Blue ant .
Of the larvae of aquatic insects to birds feed as the dipper . She is a good swimmer and diver, and the secretion of the rump gland helps her to develop a water-repellent plumage. The kingfisher is also a typical inhabitant of the Spessartwiesen . It is not to be confused with any other bird species. The regular maintenance of the Wet meadow in this area of potential habitat for nesting birds showed how the remains common snipe or the corncrake received.
flora
Due to high rainfall on impermeable soils, damp and wet meadows are created in the Lohrbachtal. It is also the best prerequisite for the formation of flat moors. Mostly moss carpets grow on the bog soils and in between the characteristic bog plants such as various sour grass plants . Fever clover , which owes its name to its fever-lowering effect , is occasionally found in wet meadows .
