The Speta squill ( Scilla spetana ) is a plant from the genus of the blue star ( Scilla ) in the family of asparagaceae (Asparagaceae).

Vegetative characteristics

The Speta squill is a perennial , herbaceous plant , the plant height of 10 to 20 cm, cm attained in rare cases of only 5 minutes. This geophyte forms onions as persistent organs. Exactly one stem round, green, sometimes slightly purple, and two, in rare cases three grass-green leaves arise from each onion. There are no other leaves as well as cover and front leaves.

Generative characteristics

The flower cluster is largely umbrella-shaped. The free, star-shaped protruding tepals are 10 to 15 mm, sometimes up to 17 mm long and bright light blue to deep cornflower blue and 3 to 4 mm wide. The flower buds as well as the ovary and the six stamens are also blue. The anthers and pollen are burgundy. The 0.7 to 3 mm long stylus gradually merges into the ovary. The seed is dark brown, has a smooth shell and a diameter of 3.5 mm.

Chromosome number

The species is hexaploid with 2n = 54.

Occurrence

The Speta squill is very rare. Except in Hungary , it occurs only in the Lower Austrian Weinviertel in the Kreuttal . It grows in lowland forests of hill height level .

Systematics

Scilla spetana belongs to the species group Scilla bifolia agg. and is not always of the species Scilla bifolia s. lat. separated, but considered, for example, as a subspecies: Scilla bifolia L. subsp. spetana (Kereszty) Trávn.
