The spit willow ( Salix hastata ) is a species of willow ( Salix ).

description

The spit willow is a densely branched small shrub with upright branches and reaches heights of 0.8 to 1.2 meters and widths of 1.5 to 2 meters. The alternate leaves are ovate and bluish green underneath and 2 to 4 cm long.

The spit willow flowers in April / May, before the leaves shoot. The 3 to 5 cm long, numerous catkins sit on 5 mm long stalks and are silvery, later yellow.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 38.

Distribution & location

Salix hastata grows in arctic and sub-arctic Europe , in North America and in the mountains of central and southern Europe . The deposits in southern Harz are extinct.

The spit willow thrives on fresh or moist, nutrient-rich and base-rich, humus-rich stone or clay soils in a sunny location. It grows in the subalpine and alpine tall shrubbery of the knee wood belt. It occurs together with Salix waldsteiniana in societies of the Salicion waldsteinianae association and also likes to be in contact with the Alnetum viridis. In the Allgäu Alps in Bavaria, it rises to the east above the Waltenberger House up to 2150 meters above sea level.

Systematics

There are three subspecies in Europe:

  • Salix hastata L. subsp. hastata
  • Salix hastata subsp. subintegrifolia (Flod.) Flod. : It occurs in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia.
  • Salix hastata subsp. vegeta (Andersson) Flod. : It occurs in Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
