The Spitzegelgruppe is a mountain group in the Gailtal Alps (Drauzug) in Carinthia . The mountains are located north of the Gail Valley below Hermagor, southeast of the Weissensee .

Location and landscape

The mountain range extends from Greifenburg in the Drautal to the Windische Höhe , and presents itself as a moderately structured ridge. You can see the southern slope of the Spitzegel from Lake Pressegger See , which is also the highest peak in the group at 2119  m . At the northwest end, the Kreuzbergsattel ( Hermagor -Greifenburg) crosses the foothills of the train.

According to the Austrian mountain group classification according to Trimmel , the group bears the number 3731, as part of the Graslitzen group (Trimmel 3730, according to Seger Mittlere Gailtaler Alpen ) and is delimited as follows:

To the east of the Spitzegel there are:

  • Vellacher Egel ( 2108  m )
  • Graslitzen ( 2044  m )
  • Tschekelock ( 1892  m )

as well as west of the cone

  • der Golz ( 2004  m )

the increasingly flat northwestern foothills are:

  • Großboden ( 1806  m )
  • Hühnernock ( 1508  m )
  • Grafenwegerhöhe ( 1438  m )

The Kreuzbergsattel crosses between the latter two .

Paths and huts

The ridge is made accessible with a high path from Kreuzbergsattel to Windischen Höhe, a section of the Gailtaler Höhenweg , and several ascent from both valleys. Huts are the Kohlröserlhütte on Großboden above Sankt Lorenzen in the Gitschtal (Ghf. Priv. 1534  m ) on the Windischen Höhe, as well as several alpine pastures along the ridge.
