The Graslitzengruppe , also called the Middle Gailtal Alps , is the central mountain group of the Gailtal Alps (Drauzug) in Carinthia . The group lies between the Gailtal below Hermagor , the Drautal above Villach , and the Weißensee .

The term is mainly used in Austrian hydrography and geology .

Location and landscape

The mountain range extends from Greifenburg in the Drautal above the Drauknies to the Drobratsch , and in the north to the Weißenbachtal with Weissensee. The highest mountain is the Spitzegel at 2119  m above sea level. A. At the northwest end, the Kreuzbergsattel ( Hermagor -Greifenburg) crosses the foothills of the group, in the east the Windische Höhe .

Boundary and neighboring mountain groups

According to the Austrian mountain group classification according to Trimmel , the group bears the number 3730, as part of the Gailtal Alps or the Drauzug , in the spatial units of Carinthia according to Seger , the group is referred to as 7d  Middle Gailtal Alps . It is defined as follows:

structure

The Graslitzengruppe is divided into a dominant, alpine southern chain and a lower northern chain, which is more of a low mountain range . According to Trimmel, the southern chain is again divided into three sections (each named from west to east):

  • the Spitzegelgruppe (3731) as the main feature, more important peaks are Golz ( 2004  m ), Spitzegel 2119  m , Vellacher Egel ( 2108  m ), Graslitzen ( 2044  m ), Tschekelock ( 1892  m )
  • the Kowesnock group (3732) east of the Windischen Höhe, with Sparbernock ( 1555  m ), Kabesnock ( 1819  m ) and Mittagsnock ( 1558  m ) via Bad Bleiberg
  • the Schwandnockgruppe (3733) subsequent to the line Bleiberg - Ebenwald with Schwandnock ( 1516  m ) and the foothills Spitzeck 1329  m and Keller Berg ( 1167  m )
  • as well as in the north the Laka group (3734), with Laka ( 1851  m ) and Wiederschwing ( 1640  m ), and some smaller foothills on the Drau

The southern chain and the Lakazug are separated by the characteristic furrow Naggl on the middle Weißensee - Almbach - Bodenalpe - Fischeralpe - Fachtnersee - Boden - Kreuzen - Kreuzenbach - Feffernitz an der Drau.

geology

Like the entire Drauzug, which is usually counted as part of the southern limestone Alps due to its limestone structure , the group belongs to series of rocks from the Alpine Triassic , like the northern limestone Alps , from which they were left behind as clods during the formation of the Alps. The same structure can be found here, with the Werfen layers (slate basement mountains, after Werfen in the Salzburger Land), a main mass of Wetterstein limestone (after the Tyrolean-Bavarian mountain). In addition, there are Raibler layers , a series of layers common to the entire limestone Alps, which was built up during the time of the Tethys , which expanded into Europe . There is a noticeable breccia formation between Wetterstein and Raibl .

Viewed tectonically, the group is still in the area of the Central Alps north of the periadriatic seam in the Gail Valley. The characteristic, east-west trending longitudinal faults are postponements (Lakazug / Spitzegelzug / Latschurzug / Goldeck), superimposed by oblique blade displacements .
