Sportsfreund Lötzsch is a German documentary about the Chemnitz cyclist Wolfgang Lötzsch . The film by Sandra Prechtel and Sascha Hilpert was shot in 2007 and was released in cinemas on July 17, 2008. It was first broadcast on television on October 6, 2008 on Arte .

action

The film tells the life story of what is probably the best cyclist in the GDR , who only failed to achieve international success because he did not join the SED and expressed criticism. He always wanted to put cycling in the foreground and only let the political come second. With this attitude, however, he became a resistance fighter in a state that notoriously mistrusted its citizens.

background

The film contains interviews with Lötzsch's former trainer Werner Marschner , his BSG supervisor Wolfgang Schoppe , his friends and the Stasi officer responsible for him, Heinz Engelhardt .

Inspired by Philipp Köster's book about Wolfgang Lötzsch, the two directors began to be interested in the athlete's fate.

Reviews

"Although the film slowly and patiently portrays the tragedy of the exceptional athlete based solely on contemporary witnesses and documents such as the Stasi reports, it offers disturbing and precise insights into a system that is based purely on oppression and cautiousness."

“[...] the directors have made a strong film. Prechtel and Hilpert succeed in describing a blatant injustice in the GDR - but without demonizing the country. "

Awards

The film received the audience award at the International Documentary Film Festival in Leipzig.
