Sprat ( Sprattus ) are a genus of marine , pelagic living pegs (Clupeidae). They are schooling fish , feed on plankton and are around 12 to 20 centimeters long. Four of the five species live in temperate and subtropical seas of the southern hemisphere, only the European sprat ( Sprattus sprattus ) occurs with two subspecies in the northern Atlantic , the Mediterranean , the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea ; it is one of the most important European commercial fish. Sprats that live in cold water have a higher number of eddies than those of warmer waters, a phenomenon they share with the herring and other related species.
