St-Gervais-St-Protais (Pontevès)
The church of St-Gervais-St-Protais in Pontevès in the Var department in the cultural region of Provence in southern France is dedicated to the two holy companions of saints Gervasius and Protasius . It is now a branch church of Barjols in the diocese of Fréjus and Toulon, which was united in 1957 .
Location and history
The church building from 1668 is located at the east end of the village in a north-south direction south of the old castle complex of Château de Pontevès . It stands where its predecessor from 1477, which was dedicated to the two saints St. Sebastian and St. Antonius , was demolished in 1666 to make way for a larger church. There was already an even earlier church on this site, dedicated to the Virgin Mary (Sainte-Marie) and destroyed in the 14th century.
architecture
The hall church , built from local quarry stone , has three naves and the interior is approx. 20 m long, 16 m wide and 8 m high. The south façade, which overlaps the roof areas, consists of a strictly rectangular wall area in which there are three arched windows above and next to the central Renaissance portal ; they are the only windows that let light into the interior. Attached to the east is the bell tower , which only slightly protrudes from the nave , which - with a square base - becomes hexagonal at three quarters of its height. It is crowned by a typical, wrought-iron bell cage with a bell from 1628.
Like the outer walls, the square columns are made of quarry stone, while the fillings are lined with brick. The apse is very flat and the choir is classically ogive .
Furnishing
The splendid main altar with twisted columns has a limestone tabernacle topped by a crown held by two angels. On the side of the altar there are two niches in which the gilded wooden statues of the two cartridges are kept. The pillars are designed as pilasters on the side of the central nave , which is very rare in Europe. The pulpit is painted green and gold and richly decorated. In the two choirs of the side aisles there are also altars, which are decorated with altarpieces made of oil from the 17th century.
A rich church treasure has been preserved in the inventory of the church, which became the property of the secular community with the secularization . This kept the treasures in the church, where they have remained to this day. The treasures included a silver plated processional cross from 1517 and another from the 17th century, a hallmarked copper basin from the 16th century and an unusual statue of St. Anne and the Virgin Mary carrying the baby Jesus. There are also two reliquaries made of gilt wood and many brass chandeliers from the 17th and 18th centuries. A total of 32 items were placed under protection.
