The Roman Catholic Church of St-Jean-de-la-Porte-Latine (German: St. John in front of the Latin Gate) is located in Bourriot-Bergonce , a French parish in the Landes department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region .

history

The church of St-Jean is dedicated to the apostle John , who, according to legend , was thrown into boiling oil at the Porta Latina in Rome , but which could not harm him. This is already attested in the 3rd century by Tertullian .

The first simple church in Bergonce was probably built in the 11th century. Apart from perhaps part of the wall of the nave , nothing remains from this era today. The building has undergone major changes over the centuries and the lack of elements with dates does not allow precise information about the chronology of the successive works. The bell gable , the open anteroom with wooden pillars and the main entrance were created in the 18th century . The apse and sacristy were rebuilt in the second half of the 19th century, possibly between 1865 and 1867, when glass windows were inserted into new window openings. At the beginning of the 19th century, an oversized stone cross was erected in the south of the nave, which had previously been a cemetery cross.

The single nave nave is extended by the three-walled apse, which is slightly narrower than the nave and is flanked by the sacristy. The nave is covered by modern pine paneling and exposed beams that were exposed after a false plaster vault was dismantled. The main entrance has oak doors and a lintel in the form of a flat arch. The building is principally built with quarry stones made of limestone and iron-bearing sandstone , called Garluche , mixed with bricks . The toothing on the outside corners of the nave are realized with Garluche to the apse with ornamental of limestone.

Nine glass windows are works by the glass painter Gustave Pierre Dagrant from Bordeaux , which were created in 1904. They show biblical people and scenes:

The church has been able to preserve several items of furniture from the time of the Ancien Régime , for example a baptismal font from 1758, the wrought iron enclosure of the choir, and a painting from 1767 depicting the encounter of Paul with the risen Jesus Christ on the way to Damascus illustrated and by the painter J.–B. Smets from Also signed, and a statue of John. The last two objects have been inscribed as Monument historique since November 28, 1989 . The sacristy contains some other items from the same period. The rest of the church furnishings date from the 19th century. These and many other objects are registered as national cultural assets.
