St. Anthony Church

The St. Antonius Church is a Catholic church in the southern Brandenburg town of Großräschen in the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district . The Maria Regina Gloriosa chapel in Freienhufen belonged to the parish and was profaned on May 4, 2015 .

history

As a result of the mining of lignite near Großräschen and the ensuing industrialization in Niederlausitz from the second half of the 19th century, there was an increase in population in Großräschen and the surrounding areas. Many Catholics, mainly from Poland and Bohemia, were among the immigrants. Großräschen was parish in Senftenberg. The first Catholic service after the Reformation took place in Großräschen on August 2, 1907 in the so-called Kurmärker am Markt. After Georg Lompa, the first clergyman, was employed in 1908 and the parsonage was built in 1909, on July 1, 1910, a separate parish curate was established .

The first groundbreaking and laying of the foundation stone for the church took place on October 20, 1912, and a year later on July 6, 1913, the church was blessed. The architect of the church was Clemens Lohmer from Leipzig . In 1913 the church received three bronze bells and in 1915 an organ from the Schweidnitz company Schlag & Söhne . In World War I, two of the three bells were melted down. These were replaced by new ones in 1925.

On September 1, 1939, the use of the Polish language in the church was banned. In 1942 two bells were again melted down for World War II . During the GDR era - in 1953 - the church became an independent parish. In the same year the interior renovation of the church began. In 1956, a couple donated four cast steel bells. These were cast by Schilling and sons in Apolda .

After the Second Vatican Council , the decision was made in 1972 to rebuild the church according to the guidelines of the council. The renovation took place from 1975 to 1979 according to plans by the Dresden architect Wolfram Starke and the Dresden sculptor Friedrich Press . The municipality took over the construction. The new altar was consecrated on May 20, 1979.

The Church of St. Antonius has been a monument in Großräschen since 2003 .

Building description

The church is built in neo-Gothic style from red bricks. The church building is 34 meters long and 20 meters wide. The inside of the nave is 11 meters high and the tower is 36 meters high. There are 210 seats in the church.

Furnishing

Jehmlich organ

Press and Starke use simple means and materials that are typical for Lausitz to redesign the church. Sanded pine wood was used as material for the altar wall, gallery, confessionals, stations of the cross , ambo and tabernacle .

On the rear wall of the church there is a newly designed gallery and underneath the glazed main entrance to the church. The apse was separated from the church by the altar wall, which was expanded into an octagon. It is used as a weekday chapel with 26 seats.

The colored church windows date from the time the church was built and were manufactured by the Quidtmanns company.

Altar wall with cross

The theme of the wooden altar wall is Through the Cross to the Resurrection . The altar wall separates the original chancel from the rest of the church building. In front of the wall is an eight-meter-high cross shaped like a body figure, which depicts a Christ approaching the congregation with a clearly visible heart wound.

organ

The original organ from 1915 by Schlag und Söhne was replaced by a Jehmlich organ (Opus 986) when the church was redesigned in the 1970s . The organ is behind the altar wall with the personified Christ. It was consecrated on September 10, 1978. In 1996 it was overhauled and a trombone 16 ′ was added to the pedal mechanism. The sound shape is based on the baroque organs of northern and central Germany. In August 2003 the organ was expanded by four stops . The mechanical grinding loading -instrument has 19  registers on two manuals and pedal .

Since 1998, organ concerts have been held in St. Antonius on the first Thursday between May and October.

Confessionals and the Way of the Cross

The confessionals and the Way of the Cross are in the side aisles. The 14 stations of the cross are designed in four groups to the left and right of the two confessionals. The individual scenes are highlighted by a stylized design. The Way of the Cross was inaugurated on March 8, 1987.

Exterior design

On the outside walls of the church are the graves of the curator Lompa and the archpriest Krieschker. The former tower cross of the church is placed on his grave.

On the outer south wall are sculptures of St. Barbara and the namesake of the church of Anthony of Padua . The Barbara sculpture is a steel cast by Heinrich Moshage . The sculpture of Saint Anthony was created from clinker ceramic by Richard Adolf Zutt .
