The Church of St. Cosmas and Damian is the Evangelical Lutheran place of worship in Bockhorn , Friesland district in Lower Saxony . Their patronage is derived from the holy twin brothers Cosmas and Damian , who are said to have healed the sick free of charge.

history

The construction of the church began in 1230. As a typical Frisian church, it is partly built from boulders and erected on a terp . In 1630 the church was damaged by lightning in a fire. Then a were baptismal font from oak , the gallery and the pulpit purchased. In addition, instead of the original vaulted ceiling, a flat beamed ceiling was drawn in, which was painted in color as early as 1776.

Building description

It is a rectangular hall church , which has a length of 37.40 m from east to west and a width of 10.30 m from north to south. The walls are about 10 m high with a constant thickness of 170 cm. On the outside, they are made of hewn granite boulders, the inner layer is made of brick . In between there is a filling made of boulders and shell limestone . The window openings in the north wall are still in their original state, the other three outer walls have been heavily modified by repairs and openings.

On the slate-covered gable roof sits a closed ridge turret with a pointed helmet and a weather vane , on the other side above the west portal, which was built in 1649, another ridge turret, which shows dials in all four directions. The bell of the clock hangs under the French hood of the western ridge.

The ogival east window was glazed in 1968 based on a design by the Bremen artist Heinz Lilienthal .

Furnishing

The oldest furnishings are a baptismal font from the 13th century and a tombstone from 1656. An oil painting Christ on the Cross is by Thomas Willeboirts Bosschaert (1614–1654) and is based on models by Rubens and van Dyck. It was acquired in Münster in 1817 for 100 thalers of gold .

The bronze altar cross was designed in 1968 by Erich Brüggemann from Stöckte near Winsen an der Luhe and cast in Berlin. In the middle, a relief shows Christ as the Lamb of God , on the four arms of the cross there are the symbols of the four evangelists : a man with wings - Matthew , a lion - Mark , a bull - Luke and an eagle - John .

organ

Organ in the Bockhorn church

The church did not have an organ until 1721/1722 when Christian Vater , a student of Arp Schnitger , was commissioned to build one. It has 19  stops on two manuals and a pedal and was played by father himself at the inauguration. After almost two centuries of repairs and maintenance work, the organ was rebuilt under Johann Martin Schmid and seven original stops were lost. Schmid built in new keyboards and tuned the instrument. Alfred Führer restored the original disposition in 1950 . In 1982/1983, with the advice of Harald Vogel , the organ was consistently restored and all non-original parts were reconstructed by the Führer company. It was even possible to derive the original mood, since the covers of the Gedackpfeifen were firmly soldered here.
