The Protestant St. Kilian Church is a church building in Dankmarshausen , a community in the Wartburg district ( Thuringia ). The church is one of the oldest in the Werra Valley . The community belongs to the Eisenach-Gerstungen parish of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

History and architecture

The hall church with the west tower and a polygonal end on the east side stands on the bank of the Werra on a hill. The lower part of the tower dates from 1431 at the earliest. The five-sided choir polygon was built in the middle of the 15th century. The church building was built near a predecessor; The reasons for this are not known. The building stands in a walled cemetery. Both the wall and the tower have loopholes that prove their use as a fortified church . The church also granted religious asylum to the persecuted .

In October 1727 the belfry of the tower ignited and burned down. Due to flying sparks, several houses nearby caught fire and were destroyed. The nave was renewed from 1731 to 1732, at the same time the tower received a wooden tower. Further renovations took place in 1948 and 1975.

Several dates are attached to the keel arch portal on the west side of the tower. The stone in the top shows the number 1431; maybe it's a reused stone. The other dates are 1586, 1731 and 1948. The vestibule in the tower has a barrel vault made of stone, while the barrel vault in the hall is made of wooden boards, the choir has a ribbed vault . In the hall there is a two-storey gallery and a patronage booth.

In 2002 the church was named after St. Kilian , who is said to have served as a mission bishop in the area.

Furnishing

  • The lectern is an 18th century work.
  • The organ front in the baroque style is on the gallery on the west side, it is decorated with carvings and angel heads. The instrument was restored in 1871 and 1964.
