The St. Petri Church in Garz / Rügen is the parish church of the Protestant parish of Garz on the island of Rügen .

history

Tower of the St. Petri Church

The Gothic brick church stands on a foundation made of boulders . Construction began around 1350, and completion should have taken place around 1400. The church was first mentioned in 1396 as "deme godeshuze tu sunte Petare tu Gartze". At that time it consisted of two west yokes with a sacristy . Only a little later, three nave yokes were added.

A granite fifth with leaf-like decorations probably dates from the time before construction began . It is estimated to be 700 years old. Its origin is unknown.

Around 1450 the building was expanded to include a pointed tower and two choir bays. The ribbed vault rests on massive pillars. The outer pillar on the nave was added in the 18th century.

Baptismal font in the church

Around 1648 the pointed tower was destroyed in a storm and replaced by today's flat tower (before 1650). Major structural changes from 1741 gave the church its current appearance. The last of the three big city fires in 1764 spared the church, but destroyed the rectory and with it the church chronicles.

From 1906 to 1914, the roof structure was renewed and the organ relocated during repair work.

In 1992/93 renewed renovation work was carried out on the roof, the tower, the outer wall and the windows. In 2003 the church received three new bells from the Bachert bell foundry .

organ

The organ was built in 1914 by the organ builder Barnim Grüneberg (Stettin), largely using the pipework of the previous organ from 1836. The Kanzellenladen instrument has 12 stops on two manuals and a pedal . The actions are pneumatic. It was restored in 1995 by the Rainer Wolter organ building workshop .
