St. Albert is a parish church in the Betzenhausen district of the city of Freiburg im Breisgau . It belongs to the pastoral care unit northwest in the dean's office Freiburg of the Archdiocese of Freiburg .

The church patron is Albert the Great (Albertus Magnus), who was born in Lauingen on the Danube in 1193 . He was canonized in 1931 and elected patron of the natural sciences. Because of its proximity to the large student settlement and because Freiburg is a university town, in which he had also lived for a time, he was chosen as the namesake.

The church was built between 1967 ( laying of the foundation stone ) and 1969 ( consecration ) based on a design by Erwin Heine (Freiburg Municipal Building Authority) under the direction of Rudolf Feßler. A church tower was not built in favor of a kindergarten, which was inaugurated in 1971 together with a community hall.

The round central building is surrounded by a single-storey corridor with a hexagonal floor plan. The walls and ceiling of the star-shaped, crown-like folded rotunda are made from only two types of prefabricated concrete parts that are prefabricated and assembled on site: very acute-angled triangles, which form the folded walls, and kinked rectangles, which were used for the roof. Between the triangular support elements there are regular free triangles that are glazed in shades of blue at room height. In the single-storey hallway, a rather red-tinted ribbon of glass also provides light from outside. This glazing with concrete glass was designed by the Tübingen painter Kurt Frank . Another source of outside light is a small lantern in the middle of the folding roof.

You enter the church through one of the two portals on the west side, which are arranged to the right and left of an interior baptistery . The altar is placed on the east side of the church, the pews are oriented towards it in a semicircle. Bruno Knittel created the free-standing tabernacle , the ambo and the altar candlesticks. Besides the Way of the Cross , the only figurative ornament is a modern copy of the Altenmarkt Madonna , which was made around 1400.

Since 1981 the church has had an organ from the Sandtner organ workshop (Opus 91), which was renovated in 2003. It has 24 registers on two manuals and a pedal .
