St. Andreas and Matthias 1985

The Church of St. Andreas and Matthias was the Roman Catholic parish church in the Lich-Steinstrasse district of the Niederzier community in the Düren district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

history

Around 1550 there was a Kunibert chapel in Lich. This chapel was probably the predecessor church of St. Andreas and Matthias in the old Lich-Steinstrasse. In 1804 Lich was elevated to a parish . Before that the place belonged to the parish Rödingen . The nave was built around 1800 in simple baroque forms. The three- story bell tower with an eight-sided dome was added in 1823. Around 1900 the hall church was extended by a transept and a three-sided choir in the neo-Gothic style. This newer part was spanned by ribbed vaults, while the nave was vaulted by a flat barrel vault.

The Lich parish church was demolished in 1986, as it had to give way to the Hambach opencast mine , like the entire double town of Lich-Steinstrasse . As a replacement, a new St. Andrew and Matthias Church was built in the Jülich-Lich-Steinstrasse resettlement site.

Furnishing

In the church there was a neo-Gothic high altar as well as two neo-Gothic side altars made of stone and a neo-Gothic pulpit made of wood with depictions of the four evangelists . In the nave there was also a chandelier held by a Maria with a baby Jesus . The windows in the baroque nave were created in 1955 by the artist Paul Franz Bonnekamp. The church also had windows by Johannes Beeck, which were also created around 1955. Some windows were installed in the new church at the resettlement site.
