history

Oberzier was an independent parish as early as 1122 . In the Liber valoris from 1308, Oberzier is listed as a parish in the Deanery Jülich in the Archdiocese of Cologne . At that time, however, only a single pastor was responsible for Ober- and Niederzier, although both places already had their own churches. From this it can be concluded that the Niederzierer parish very likely emerged from the Oberzierer, but became independent in the Middle Ages.

At that time the Cologne monastery Groß St. Martin owned the rights to the church . At the end of the 18th century, the Duke of Jülich also had rights to the church. These rights only ended with the French era . From its inception until the middle of the 19th century, the Oberzier parish still had the branches Huchem, Stammeln, Köttenich and Selhausen . These were only separated in 1864 and raised to the new parish of St. Josef Huchem-Stammeln .

Building history

There were already three previous churches on the square of the church. Nothing more is known about the parish church mentioned in Liber valoris 1308. It was replaced by a new church in the 16th century, of which only the two lower floors of the bell tower are preserved today. In 1753 this church was demolished, with the exception of the choir and bell tower. A new nave was built in Baroque forms and the bell tower was raised and got its current shape. In 1820 and 1821 the parish church received a new sacristy .

In the middle of the 19th century the baroque parish church became too small, whereupon the church council decided to build a new church. The approval for the new building by the Cologne Archdiocese was granted in 1869. First the nave and the choir were demolished and between 1870 and 1871 today's parish church was built according to the plans of the Cologne diocesan master builder Vincenz Statz in the neo-Gothic style , including the bell tower. In 1926 the main portal on the ground floor of the church tower was redesigned in neo-baroque forms .

During the Second World War , the central nave was destroyed to the ground. The tower and choir were only slightly damaged. The reconstruction was completed by 1950. The plans were provided by the Düsseldorf architect Heinrich Beck . In 1960 and 1961 the parish church was restored and redesigned according to plans by architect Jakob Hanrath from Düren . While the exterior of the parish church has remained almost unchanged from the pre-war state, the interior was changed significantly during the reconstruction. The central nave and the two side aisles were replaced by a single-nave room with a flat ceiling, with all of the preserved walls being integrated. Only in the choir has the vault been preserved.

In 1992/93 the church was completely renovated and brought as close as possible to the pre-war state.
