The Catholic parish church of St. Antonius is a listed church building in Sönnern , a district of Werl in the Soest district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). The community is part of the Werl Nord pastoral network in the Hellweg dean's office in the Archdiocese of Paderborn. The church is under the patronage of Anthony of Padua.

History and architecture

The Catholic community of Sönnern has belonged to several parishes in the course of its history. At first she was part of Hilbeck , then during the Reformation Bausenhagen . Before Sönnern was raised to the parish, it came to Büderich .

In a document from May 1897, which is kept in the parish archive, the following is handed down: The farmer Franz Fester zu Sönnern intends to give the parish of Büderich a garden plot to build a vicariate house in Sönnern and to a vicarium garden there, as well as 5 hectares of 92 ares 10 square meters of arable land for the price of ten thousand marks for the benefit of the vicariate to be founded in Sönnern. The pastor Cruse was authorized to accept this donation for the parish of Büderich and to execute the relevant sales contract, also to pay the purchase price to be raised by the Catholics Sönner and the surrounding area.

The neo-Romanesque building was built between 1897 and 1898 . Employment of a vicar and the elevation to a branch parish with its own asset management was obtained in 1898. The parish was separated from the parish in Büderich in 1902 and legally independent with the name Parish Vicarie St. Antonius von Padua. A Catholic baptismal register was started in 1903 and a death register in 1908.

Opposite the church is the listed war memorial.

Furnishing

  • In 1908 the organ building company Stockmann from Werl installed an organ with ten registers . A renovation of the instrument was necessary in 1960.
  • In 1965 a memorial plaque was put up for the missing and fallen of the two world wars.
  • A carpenter repaired the old wooden ratchet in 1985
  • A one-footed monstrance from around 1700 was donated to the church at the beginning of the 20th century; it was re-gilded in 1934.
  • In a niche in the celebration altar there is a relic cross from 1932. The relic inside, a piece from the waist of St. Anthony, was stolen in February 2011 and never appeared again. The Fathers of the Franciscan Monastery in Werl donated a Francis relic as a replacement in May 2012.

Peal

Originally, a temporary arrangement made of three small cast steel bells was installed in 1897/98. These were a bell from the Harreveld Franciscan monastery, a court bell and a school bell. A new ring of four bronze bells, tone sequence of "-es" -f "-as", was hung in 1988.
