history

In 1308 a church in Berk was first mentioned in a document. Berk was a subsidiary of the parish of St. Johann Baptist Kronenburg until the 18th century . In 1713 the branch church received a vicar and from 1719 baptisms were allowed in the branch church . Berk was raised to an independent parish in 1803.

In addition, Berk has been a place of pilgrimage since 1768. The pilgrimage to the fourteen helpers in need was introduced by the Berker Adolf Scholzen, who made a pilgrimage to Rome due to the plague and got to know the brotherhood of the 14 helpers there. Since then, the pilgrimage has taken place every year on Mondays between Ash Wednesday and Easter Monday .

Building history

The first church in Berk already existed in the 12th century. The main components of the bell tower date from this time . This hall church was extended in 1516 by a Gothic , three-sided closed choir and a sacristy . The nave was renewed in the 16th and 18th centuries. From 1719 baptisms were allowed in the branch church.

Since the church had become too small for the increased population, the Berker pastor Hubert Windelschmidt planned an extension in 1934. However, the plans could not be realized until 1954. On January 12, 1971, the church burned down completely except for the Gothic choir and the Romanesque tower. A new nave was built around 1973 based on plans by the Aachen architects Fritz Jäncke and Erich Heyne. On September 30, 1973, the church was finally consecrated by the Aachen Bishop Johannes Pohlschneider .

Furnishing

In the interior there is a relief by the Mainz artist Eberhard Linke depicting the Fourteen Holy Helpers, a reliquary of the Fourteen Holy Helpers and a tabernacle from 1972. There are also some figures of saints with depictions of St. Brictius of Tours (parish patron), Our Lady and St. Joseph of Nazareth inside. There are also images of angels and roses on the ceiling in the choir. The figure with the white robe represents St. Bartholomäus . Furthermore there is St. Andreas . The coats of arms with the red and white divisions indicate the former Order of Malta of the County of Kronenburg, to which Berk belonged until 1803. The windows in the choir were created by the glass painter Wilhelm de Graaff around 1954 and the windows in the nave were designed by Hubert Spierling in 1994.
