Parish Church of St. Cosmas and Damian

The Catholic branch church St. Cosmas and Damian is a listed church building in Holzweiler , a district of Erkelenz in the district of Heinsberg ( North Rhine-Westphalia ) and belongs to the parish "Christkönig Erkelenz".

History and architecture

It is a predecessor of the 11/12. Century. In its place, a neo-Gothic brick basilica with transept-like additions and a three-apse closure was built from 1857 to 1859 according to plans by Vincenz Statz . The first work on the erection of the presented west tower did not begin until 1903. In July 1903 the old dilapidated spire was torn down and the old wood was sold on August 18, 1903. Only after another eleven years did the demolition of the old tower stump and the new construction of the tower begin in April 1914. The foundation stone was laid on June 7, 1914, a total of 57 years after the foundation stone was laid for the new choir and nave. The First World War , which began on August 1, 1914, interrupted the new building. In the spring of 1921 construction began again and the 57 m high tower was completed after a short time. Next to the south entrance is a stone dedicated to the merchant Tiberius Claudius Justus. It originally comes from the proven Roman villa in the village. The tracery windows with lead glazing were made from 1960 to 1969 from boxes by Ernst Jansen-Winkeln . In the interior there is a ribbed vault.

Holzweiler has not been an independent parish since 2010. It became the parish “St. Maria and Elisabeth "Erkelenz merged, this was abolished in 2015 and with the parish" St. Lambertus Erkelenz ”merged to form the new parish“ Christkönig Erkelenz ”.

Furnishing

  • The figures of Cosmas and Damian were created from terracotta or tuff around 1860 based on models by Christian Mohr from the south transept portal of Cologne Cathedral . They stood in the old high altar.
  • The wooden triumphal cross is from the beginning of the 15th century.
