St. Georg in Stätzling

The parish church of St. Georg is a monument in Stätzling near Friedberg .

history

Regarding a previous building, only the design of a Gothic tower in the 17th century is known. The current church was built between 1696 and 1699 on behalf of the Friedberg district judge and caretaker Gallus Sebastian von Deuring . He had inherited the Hofmark Stätzling in 1692. The construction of the church on a mountain ledge was intended to radiate the Catholic presence over the Protestant imperial city. In addition to its function as a parish church , the building was also a place of worship for the local lord. The oratorios in the chancel were reserved for him and his family. In the course of a restoration in 1970, the original color of the stucco was restored.

building

The building is a closed, towering, block-like rectangular building. The eastern window openings extending over three floors convey a rather profane character. The slender tower in the north has a square base divided by cornices and a polygonal top with an onion dome and tall windows. Inside, a pilaster- structured hall with a needle cap barrel and a retracted rectangular choir reveals itself . The pilasters resting on consoles support a strong framework that separates the wall and ceiling architecture. In the choir there are two-storey oratorios to the side. The family crypt of the Deuring builder is located under the altar .

Furnishing

inner space

The church's architect and plasterer is not documented; However, it is certain that this is Johann Schmutzer , one of the founders of the Wessobrunn school . The raised stucco work on the ceiling up to 40/50 cm from the background. Both the pulpit and the high altar are part of the wall architecture. The altar panel shows the Holy Family with God the Father and the Holy Spirit . The side altars are dedicated to St. Sebastian (left) and St. Anthony (right) consecrated. The altar leaves are attributed to Johann Reismiller (1697) from Friedberg. The original frescoes were replaced by new paintings by Josef Kober in 1873, which were removed after the war and replaced by frescoes by the Göggingen painter Hummel. In 2003 these were then replaced by paintings by Franz Kugelmann, who continued the baroque tradition.
