Inside view

St. Heinrich is a Catholic former garrison church in Kiel - Blücherplatz , Feldstrasse 172. The building erected between 1907 and 1909 is now one of the city's cultural monuments .

history

The Catholic church was built right next to the 18th century forest nursery . Not far from the church is the Protestant garrison church from the years 1905-1907, which is called Petruskirche . Adalbert Kelm , the architect of the St. Heinrich Church, had already planned a Catholic church in the city of Gleiwitz , but this was not implemented. Kelm apparently had a slight influence on the construction of the neighboring Petruskirche. On the basis of a suggestion by Kelm, the Petruskirche was not geosted , but rather northed for urban planning reasons. The St. Heinrich Church was built around the same time as the Mürwik Naval School in Flensburg - Mürwik , Kelm's main factory. Apparently Kelm had also planned a church building belonging to the naval school. This four-tower church building was never realized either and would obviously have had little resemblance to St. Heinrich. St. Heinrich is thus the only church building built according to plans by Adalbert Kelm.

The construction of the star vault and the main roof of the St. Heinrich Church is at the beginning of the modern reinforced concrete construction , which Emil Mörsch represented in his textbook Der Eisenbetonbau . 40 percent of the church was destroyed in an air raid on Kiel on July 24, 1944. The reinforced concrete roof structure was hardly damaged. In 1948 the church was restored.

In 2000/01 the church was placed under monument protection.

The previously independent parish of St. Heinrich has belonged since 2014 together with the previous parishes of St. Birgitta ( Mettenhof ), St. Joseph (Kiel-Ost, Heikendorf and Schönberg ) and St. Nikolaus (Kiel-Mitte, Kiel-Süd and Kronshagen ) to the parish of Francis of Assisi in Kiel ( Archdiocese of Hamburg ).
