St. John Nepomuk Church

St. Johannes Nepomuk is a Catholic church in Neckargemünd in the Rhine-Neckar district in northwest Baden-Württemberg . It was built between 1894 and 1896 in the neo-Romanesque style.

history

In 1556, Elector Ottheinrich introduced the Reformation to the Electoral Palatinate . Only when Philipp Wilhelm , a Catholic branch of the Wittelsbach family, ruled the Electoral Palatinate again from 1685 , were Catholic services possible again. In 1688 the Catholics of Neckargemünd received a pastor from the diocese of Würzburg , who initially lived on the Dilsberg until a parsonage was built in Neckargemünd in 1700. The Ulrichskirche, however, was assigned to the Reformed when the Palatinate church was divided , whereby simultaneous use ended. The Catholic parish celebrated its services from 1707 in the town hall, which was completely converted into a parish church in 1724/25.

After Johannes Nepomuk was canonized in 1729, the church was consecrated in his honor on May 6, 1735. At the end of the 19th century it was decided to build a large church. The construction was carried out from 1894 to 1896. On May 30, 1897, the new Johannes Nepomuk Church was consecrated . For the 100th anniversary it was renovated and the choir room redesigned by the artist Michael Münzer . The parish is now part of the Neckargemünd pastoral care unit in the Kraichgau dean's office in the Archdiocese of Freiburg .
